The Long Island Maritime Museum (LIMM) – Call to Artists!

May 20 @ 10:00 am - July 31 @ 4:00 pm

The Long Island Maritime Museum (LIMM) is inviting local artists to share their creative talents for an art auction with a local cause! We are raising funds for the 2024/2025 restoration of a National Historic Landmark, Priscilla, an 1888 oyster sloop and the oldest and only sailing workboat to survive from the Great South Bay oyster fleet. Each winter, Priscilla is lovingly maintained by her crew and shipwrights, receiving fresh paint and light repair work. Every 20 years, she requires a more intensive restoration. Beginning in October of 2024, work began to replace her deck, mast, and to refasten her hull—work required to maintain her Coast Guard certification. While the Museum has raised a significant amount of funding towards the required work, there is still more needed to reach our goal and to keep this treasure available for the public to enjoy.

The wooden mast that’s being replaced has been carefully cut into beautiful cross-sections, or slices. Artist volunteers are invited to use these slices to create a piece of maritime-themed artwork. The slices are still available for pickup at the LIMM, Mondays through Fridays, 10 AM – 4 PM.

If you are interested in participating but can’t pick up a slice during weekday hours (M-F, 10-4), call us to explore other options!

Finished pieces can be dropped off to the museum no later than Thursday, 7/31.

Details regarding the exhibit opening and auction will be announced.
