“A Rose By Any Other Name” – Juror Barbara Applegate

The Huntington Arts Council is proud to announce “A Rose by Any Other Name”, Juror Barbara Applegate. The exhibit is on display from March 24 through April 16, 2016. The Artist Reception is Friday, April 1 from 6-8 pm at the Main Street Gallery, 213 Main Street Huntington, NY 11743. All are welcome to attend. This is a free event.

We all recognize that the works of William Shakespeare continue to inspire us. In recognition of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the HAC invited artists to submit work, literal or abstract, which was inspired by this line (“A Rose by Any Other Name”) from Juliet’s balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet.

This quote from Juror Barbara Applegate, describes her impressions of the work in the show “The frustration of categories and labels belies many contemporary artists, so they share Juliet’s frustration of her lover attached to the wrong label.  “O, be some other name!  What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.”

The artists in this juried exhibition approach the theme of “A Rose by any Other Name” in a variety of modes.  Some artists offer paintings and drawings of roses (and other flowers) where the viewer is compelled to call to mind memories of their sweet smell.  Others are interested in the components of roses and separate their elements into abstraction.  Additionally, the topic of Juliet is handled in several of these works; her deep love for Romeo, her devotion to her family, and her death.  Within the exhibition are a few reminders that sweetness is in the eye of the beholder and that it is not universally shared.

The entries for this exhibition are all high-quality works of art and explore the theme through individual investigation.  This made making selections quite difficult, but reminds me of how much excellent artwork is being produced in our area.  I look forward to the exhibition and I’d like to thank the Huntington Arts Council for inviting me to be the juror for this exhibition.”
