Capturing bark
After trees lose their leaves, a way to identify a tree in winter is a closer look at the texture, pattern, and color of its bark all of which are specific to particular trees. In this workshop we will complete a small study of a piece of bark in graphite, colored pencil, or a combination of the two. The color of bark is mostly a variation of some kind of brown. Perhaps not at first sight, but browns can be complex. We will aim to replicate the correct hue and ways to deepen it. Students may work from photographs provided by the instructor, their own images, or may bring a piece of bark to class.
Pieces of bark can be found on the ground in a woodland, on fallen trees, or among firewood.
