Considered the preeminent painter of his era, French artist Jacques-Louis David painted in the neo classical style and documented the tumultuous era in France’s late eighteenth to early nineteenth century. His painting “the Death of Marat” came to define the French revolution, and he later gained the attention of Napoleon, who made him First Painter to the Emperor in 1804.
