SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents Hot Tuna "Acoustic & Electric"
DESCRIPTION:Hot Tuna\, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady\, perform with a well-honed and solid power – always in the groove from their years of experience and mutual inspiration. Started as a side project during Jefferson Airplane days\, the constant\, the very definition of Hot Tuna\, has always been Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady. The two boyhood pals have never wavered in one of the most enduring friendships in Rock history. \nFrom their days playing together as teenagers in the Washington\, DC area\, through years of inventive Psylodelic rock in San Francisco (1996 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees)\, to their current acoustic and electric blues sound\, no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady\, the founders and continuing core members of Hot Tuna. At the 2016 Grammys\, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards. \n“Jorma Kaukonen is a force in American music\, equally adept at fingerpicked acoustic folk and blues as he is at wailing on an electric.” – Acoustic Guitar Guitarist and vocalist\, Jorma Kaukonen is a highly respected interpreter of roots music\, blues\, Americana\, and popular rock-and-roll. Jorma’s repertoire goes far beyond psychedelic rock; he is a music legend and one of the finest singer-songwriters in music. Jorma tours the world bringing his unique styling to old blues while writing new songs of weight and dimension. \n“Jack Casady is virtually unparalleled–and yet he has one of the most truly unique electric-bass voices in rock…he can melt into a supportive role but when opportunity knocks\, he bursts forth with creative lines–both simple and ornate–that are unlike any you’ve heard” – Premier Guitar One of the most unique innovators in the sixty-year history of the bass guitar\, Jack Casady made his sweeping melodic mark helping to create the “San Francisco Sound” with legendary rock group Jefferson Airplane. Jack went on to track with Jimi Hendrix\, Crosby\, Stills\, Nash & Young\, Warren Zevon\, members of the Grateful Dead\, John Lee Hooker\, and Gov’t Mule. Casady\, regarded as one of rock’s greatest bassists\, is certainly one of its most original. \n“Hot Tuna is a Psychedelic-Blues Institution” – Rolling Stone Magazine

SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents W.A.S.P. "40 Years Live World Tour" with Special Guest: Armored Saint
DESCRIPTION:Steve Vai – originally scheduled for February 25th\, 2022 – is rescheduled to October 30th\, 2022 \nHuntington\, Long Island\, N.Y. (Tuesday\, January 18\, 2022 @ 1pm) – Steve Vai at the Paramount – originally scheduled for February 25th\, 2022 – has been rescheduled for October 30th\, 2022. In a statement from the band\, “Approximately one year ago\, Vai underwent shoulder surgery to repair an injury. That procedure was successful\, enabling him to record the upcoming studio album release of Inviolate (Favored Nations / Mascot Label Group). In preparing for the tour\, it became clear that a new injury emerged that requires another surgery prohibiting the tour to be staged as announced. Vai shares\, ‘I’m gutted that we have to move this tour\, but I also know it’s in the best interests for us and the fans that we do.”\nNo exchanges are required – all tickets from 2/25/22 will be valid for 10/30/22. For any questions or concerns\, please visit paramountny.com. \nA virtuoso guitarist\, visionary composer\, and consummate producer who sculpts musical sound with infinite creativity and technical mastery\, Steve Vai has awed fans of all genres with his exceptional guitar skills and musicianship for decades. At age 12\, he started taking guitar lessons from Joe Satriani. At 18\, he began his professional music career transcribing for\, and then playing with\, the legendary Frank Zappa. More than three decades\, over 15 million in album sales\, and three GRAMMY Awards later\, Vai has proven himself\, in his own right\, to be one of music’s true originals. \nVai’s work has been recognized with a long list of awards and honors\, including over 15 from Guitar Player magazine alone. His career accomplishments have earned him honorary doctorates from Berklee College of Music and Musicians Institute. The 2016 Long Island Music Hall of Fame inductee was voted the 10th “Greatest Guitarist” by Guitar World magazine and consistently lands among the best in various lists of the top guitarists of all time. In 2012\, the TEC Foundation honored him with the prestigious Les Paul Award\, created in 1991 to salute those who have set the highest standard of excellence in the creative application of technology. Past winners of the Les Paul Award include Paul McCartney\, Neil Young\, Herbie Hancock\, Steely Dan\, and Bob Clearmountain. In bestowing it on Vai\, TEC noted\,“Steve Vai’s sheer breathtaking facility on the guitar is acclaimed in the rock world and beyond…Vai has dedicated his talents to creatively advance the language of music. While many artists fit easily into a single category\, Steve Vai remains unclassifiable. He is a musical alchemist of the highest order.” \nVai has toured the world as a solo artist\, as a member of G3\, Generation-Axe\, and with Frank Zappa\, David Lee Roth (just after Roth left Van Halen)\, Alcatrazz\, and Whitesnake—at the peak of its popularity. Vai’s full discography encompasses more than 60 albums\, including many with Zappa\, others from stints with Roth and Whitesnake\, as well as live releases\, collaborations\, compilations\, and orchestral works. Highlights include 1990’s groundbreaking Passion and Warfare\, and 2007’s Sound Theories Vol. 1 & 2\, performed with the Netherlands’ Metro-pole Orkest.\nVai’s other orchestral compositions include “The Middle of Everywhere\,” which\nhad its world premiere in 2011 with the Noord Nederlands Orkest. The orchestra’s\ndirector\, Marcel Mandos\, said of Vai’s work\, “Steve Vai’s music can easily compete with that of famous contemporary composers.” \nAs an accomplished audio producer\, Vai has written\, produced\, and engineered all of his solo albums\, and released many via Favored Nations Entertainment\, his own independent record label that has also released over 70 albums by legendary musicians such as Tommy Emmanuel\, Steve Lukather\, Eric Johnson\, Billy Sheehan\, Larry Carlton and many more. For Vai\,\nvirtuosity and versatility are not mutually exclusive. He has created music for blockbuster films\, best selling video games\, national sports franchises\, and corporate brand initiatives. \nIn 2012\, Vai embarked on an epic three-year tour spanning 253 engagements (including shows\, concerts with various orchestras\, & master classes) in 52 countries in support of his 16th solo album release\, the critically acclaimed The Story of Light. Upon signing a multi-recording agreement with SONY Music Entertainment and Legacy Recordings in 2015\, Vai released Stillness In Motion –\nVai Live in L.A.\, a 2-CD set and 2-DVD set\, internationally. The multi-album deal marked an SME homecoming for Vai\, who set the gold and platinum standard\nfor instrumental rock music across a series of albums released through Relativity and Epic Records from 1990’s game-changing Passion and Warfare (his second album and first major label release) through 2007’s orchestral Sound Theories\, Vol. I & II. \nTo commemorate the 25th anniversary of his landmark album\,\nPassion and Warfare — highly regarded as one of the greatest instrumental rock guitar recordings of all time — Vai released Modern Primitive/Passion and Warfare 25th Anniversary Edition in 2016. The release\, which included previously unreleased material\, was celebrated by a very special 100+ date world tour in which he performed the entire Passion and Warfare record live from top to bottom for the first time. Vai and his band hit Europe\, the U.S.\, South America\, and Mexico. \nIn addition to his solo tour work\, Vai is known for his creative live performances with orchestras around the world and for projects such as Vai Academy (the next installment of his guitar camp\, typically held every 18 months: Vai Academy 6.0 will take place in August 2022)\, Alien Guitar Secrets master classes\, and Generation Axe — a unique combination of five fiercely talented guitar players in which he currently tours internationally with Zakk Wylde\, Yngwie Malmsteen\, Nuno Bettencourt\, and Tosin Abasi. Generation Axe finished an extensive second\nU.S. tour in November 2018 and embarked on a second tour of Asia during the fall of 2019. The supergroup’s first recording\, The Guitars That Destroyed The World: Live In China\, was released June 28\, 2019 via earMUSIC as a CD digipak\, limited colored 2 LP+download and digital. The record culls performances from Generation Axe’s 11-city run in Asia in 2017. In August 2020\, Generation Axe was joined by very special guest Brian May for a virtual jam session to play the iconic Queen song\, “Bohemian Rhapsody” during an AXS-TV special called At Home and Social with Nuno Bettencourt & Friends. The show raised funds for the Music Forward Foundation’s Crew Nation initiative that supports touring and venue crews\nwho suffered due to the coronavirus lockdown. \nIn the summer of 2018\, Vai completed perhaps one of his biggest undertakings yet\, putting together and hosting a 53 1/2-hour-long jam (happening over consecutive hours) called the Big Mama-Jama Jamathon in Hollywood\, CA\, to benefit Extraordinary Families. The unprecedented jam included many hours of performances from Vai as well as the likes of Al Di Meola\, Orianthi\, Dave Navarro\, Dweezil Zappa\, Lee Ritenour\, Steve Morse\, Nuno Bettencourt\, Tosin Abasi\, Vernon Reid\, Derek Smalls\, Moby\, and hundreds more. The jamathon raised over $100\,000 for Extraordinary Families\, a leading nonprofit foster family\, adoption\, and advocacy\nagency dedicated to improving the daily lives and long-term outcomes of children and youth in foster care. Vai also sits on the board of directors of this charity. \nVai’s signature instruments include the groundbreaking Ibanez JEM guitar\, which he designed in 1985 with first-of-its-kind features at that time\, including a 5-way phase aligned pickup selector\, 24-fret neck and deep cutaway\, the floating tremolo and the monkey grip. The JEM\, which debuted in 1987\, is now one of the longest running\, most successful signature series guitars in history\, and for over a decade its sister model—the RG—is at times second in worldwide sales only to the Fender Stratocaster. Also for Ibanez\, Vai designed “The Universe\,” the first commercial 7-string electric guitar — an instrument that inspired a revolutionary metal subculture that started in the mid ’90s. In January 2020\, Vai unveiled a striking brand-new guitar: the Ibanez PIA\, which “takes the most iconic elements of Vai’s JEM model\nand amps them up into an S-style electric perfect for modern players in 2020\,” according to Guitar Magazine. The guitar’s moniker stands for Paradise in Art.\nThere’s a second personal meaning as well (Pia is Vai’s wife’s name). Among his many other innovative collaborations with equipment manufacturers\, he designed the Steve Vai Legacy V3 series of all-tube amplifiers with Carvin Corporation. \nIn the film realm\, Vai has credits including Executive Producer for the acclaimed 2008 Hank Garland biopic Crazy\, in which he also appears as Hank Williams. In the 1986 movie Crossroads\, inspired by the legend of blues icon Robert Johnson\,\nVai appears as Jack Butler—“the devil’s guitarist”—and collaborated with Ry Cooder on the music scenes. \nIn 1998\, Vai established (with Ruta Sepetys) the Make a Noise Foundation to provide instruments and music education to young musicians without means.\n“Music educates the whole person as an integrated individual. It educates the mind\, the senses\, and the emotions\,” says Vai. “Those interested in music should not have to sacrifice their ability to develop important skills and express emotions due to limited financial resources.” \nIn 2019\, Vai released Vaideology: Basic Music Theory for Guitar Players\,\na comprehensive music theory book catered to the needs of virtually any aspiring musicians\, but focused on guitar players. The immediate success of this book in its first day of release\, along with the forthcoming translations into various world languages\, points to this book becoming an historical classic. \nDuring the worldwide pandemic in 2020 and 2021\, Vai has been focused on creating new music at The Harmony Hut\, his home studio in Encino\, California\, including recording an acoustic record (a life-long realization) and a new instrumental electric record. He hosted two popular livestreams in a series spanning several weeks: Alien Guitar Secrets Live: Music and You\, in which he offered insights into the guitar\, music\, his career and the music business and Under It All\nwhere Vai focused on more esoteric life principals and topics. Ever pushing the envelope\, in celebration of his birthday\, on June 6\, 2020 Vai debuted “Candle Power”—a new song and performance video—which is the first composition to showcase his innovative and acclaimed “Joint Shifting” Technique\, where\, according to Vai\, “you bend a note while fretting another\, but I wanted to do this technique with a combination of double and triple stop single note bends while fretting other notes and releasing bends.” On March 12\, 2021\, while recovering from trigger finger and shoulder surgery Vai offered up a video performance of a new composition called “Knappsack” played with just his fretting hand (his picking hand was firmly fastened in a sling behind his guitar) wielding his Ibanez Onyx Black PIA guitar. Guitar World Magazine called the performance “a scorching playthrough that would be near-impossible for most players with two fully functioning hands.”\nVai is gearing up for a far-reaching\, 250-date world tour set to begin in 2022.\nThe tour will include a break to record four hours of his orchestral music in Europe with the Metropole Orchestra and the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.

SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents The Amity Affliction & Silverstein with Special Guests: UnityTX & Holding Absence
DESCRIPTION:THE AMITY AFFLICTION: \nSince emerging in 2008 on the debut Severed Ties\, The Amity Affliction have served up three ARIA gold-certified albums\, Youngbloods [2010]\, Chasing Ghosts [2012] and This Could Be Heartbreak [2016]. They also achieved platinum certification for the seminal Let The Ocean Take Me [2014]. The band achieved four consecutive #1 debuts on the ARIA chart with Chasing Ghosts\, This Could be Heartbreak\, Let The Ocean Take Me and Misery[2018]. Most recently Everyone Loves You…Once You Leave Them [2020] continued their ARIA chart streak\, debuting at #2 and showed the band returning to their heavier side with a global stream tally surpass 460 million and counting. The Amity Affliction have also been a dominating live act\, headlining arena tours and festival bills alike worldwide throughout their career. \nSILVERSTEIN: \nFew bands on their 22nd lap around the scene could claim to be in “just getting started” mode as much as punk stalwarts Silverstein. \nThe release of their tenth studio album\, Misery Made Me\, finds the group spring boarding off the heights they’ve reached over the past handful of years; their latest album (2020’s A Beautiful Place To Drown) adding 80 Million streams to a mind-numbing career total of 500 Million; it collecting a nomination for Rock Album Of The Year at the esteemed Juno Awards; and its most recent headliner selling out nearly every date in elite rooms. \nIn bringing Misery Made Me to life Silverstein have continued to build on their already-wide reaching impact. Immersing themselves in new technologies like TikTok\, Discord\, NFTs\, the metaverse and Twitch (even holding public writing sessions with fans over the latter) during its formation\, the band have confirmed their unique ability to adapt and connect in all cycles of their career. \nInterestingly\, amid all the positivity and connectivity injected into its creation there comes a dark set of themes underpinning the album\, as its title might suggest. Inspired by the past two years\, Misery Made Me is a depiction of Silverstein – and world at large’s – collective turmoil\, frustration\, and anxiety. \n“I wanted to explore the meaning of ‘Misery’ as a main theme throughout the album\,” says vocalist Shane Told. “Despite the mountains climbed and boulders pushed during recent years\, we were confronted by the weight and misery of staying relatively in the same place for a long period of time. Finding peace in the reality of this misery became important. The record is about the acceptance of a new reality and adapting to it.” \nUltimately\, Misery Made Me finds the band trying to navigate the ever-worsening challenges of our modern world – angst\, doomscrolling\, and disassociation. It’s a record that is a product of the moment in time in which it was created yet doesn’t feel like it will date itself anytime soon\, as many of its topics of loneliness\, anxiety and isolation are eternal human struggles. \nExemplified by the anthemic opener ‘Our Song’\, Misery Made Me is part acceptance of the band’s personal miseries\, and part declaration that they will not be buried by them. At the back end of the record lies ‘Live Like This’ (ft. nothing\,nowhere.) and arguably its most bleak and haunting lyric: “I don’t want to die\, but I can’t live like this.” \nSingles ‘It’s Over’ and ‘Ultraviolet’ dive deeper into this feeling of desperation\, describing the utter helplessness of losing control to anxiety. \n“’It’s Over’ is about the spiral that leads to giving up\,” shares guitarist Paul Marc Rousseau. “Those anxiety packed hours when you can’t feel anything but the low\, steady crescendo of panic that eventually gets so intense your fingertips lose sensation. It’s hopeless to feel but pointless to endure. I didn’t learn anything from feeling that way. I just wanted it to stop.” \n“’Ultraviolet’ is about feeling powerless and under the control of the chemicals in your brain\,” he adds. “Ultraviolet light itself being invisible felt like the right way to describe this notion. To get lost in this unseeable thing. UV also causes physical damage to our skin\, so it serves as a sort of ‘proof’ that something invisible like anxiety can hurt us.” \nFilled with moments of relentless energy throwing back to their hardcore roots (‘Die Alone’ ft. Andrew Neufeld)\, to visionary moments of modern heavy (‘The Altar / Mary’)\, Misery Made Me fastens Silverstein’s status as torchbearers of the scene on all fronts. \nIt’s both intriguing and inspiring that a band – who could have merely rested on the impressive legacy they’ve already cemented – would continue to dig deep and find the inspiration to reach people in meaningful new ways. Misery Made Me is a campaign hinged on Silverstein’s reflection and gratitude for their roots\, their honouring of their earliest fans\, and their staunch desire to explore forward-thinking and adventurous ways to connect with new ones. \nMisery Made Me is out May 6 via UNFD. \nSILVERSTEIN IS:\nShane Told Vocals\nPaul Marc Rousseau Guitar\nJosh Bradford Guitar\nBilly Hamilton Bass\nPaul Koehler Drums

SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents Apocalyptica "The CELL - 0 Tour" with Special Guests: Leprous & Wheel
DESCRIPTION:“Cell-0 represents the core of everything. For us it is a particle that symbolizes the essence of all. That is to say\, where everything comes from and where everything ends up…” -Eicca Toppinen – Apocalyptica (cellist and founding member) \nApocalyptica are true explorers\, always seeking new frontiers and uncharted territories in which to express themselves. With Cell-0\, their 9th studio album\, the ambitious and electric quartet have not simply returned to their non-vocal roots\, they have traveled deeper and further into the universe of instrumental music than ever before. That first love and passion which fueled Apocalyptica to form during 1993 in Helsinki now carries richer layers of knowledge and experience\, which in turn have led to the band to a fundamental realization and creative path. \n“We wanted to challenge ourselves to find further flavours in the cello itself\,” says cellist Perttu Kivilaakso “had we found them all? Had we explored every corner to find them?” \n“We went about creating Cell-0 as a full piece of art and not thinking about singles or ‘the timing of singles’ or anything like that\,” continues Eicca “it’s challenging to get all the details and colours right and still have the energy of being a real metal cello band.” continues Eicca\, who like Perttu and fellow cellist Paavo Lötjönen graduated from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki “So that was the main goal for us when doing this album\, to have those two very different worlds connecting to each other in a stronger\, more explorative way than ever before.” \nThe genesis for Cell-0’s creation arrived as Apocalyptica were busy revisiting their initial breakthrough turf on tour. During 2018’s 20th anniversary tour celebrating their genre-breaking debut album Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos\, the importance and potential of their roots started to take on deeper proportions. \n“We found that these concentrated instrumental events helped us to find ourselves better than on other albums\,” explains Perttu\, “this ‘real’ connection between the cello and the audience was renewed\, and made us want to both self-produce and lure ourselves to find the real core of why we began and why we started. I think it is braver and more progressive in terms of the writing. \nAs the band began their journey at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki\, it was clear that such discoveries were not going to come easily. Yet afforded the freedom to explore and create without the constraints of format or schedule\, Apocalyptica were invigorated by the process. \n“On Cell-0 you can clearly hear that we did not take the easiest path\,” chuckles Eicca\, “when we might’ve thought something was good\, we’d then say it wasn’t great\, kick it out and work at it again. And that’s been the tool for us to develop the songwriting\, the arrangement\, the production\, every aspect of making this album. It’s a hard process to be in the studio for a couple of months and keep on challenging yourselves every day for twelve hours a day\, but that stamina is something you learn in your career. Some bands get lazy and just release albums that don’t bring anything new to the table\, that’s not our way of working.” \nIn pushing themselves to find other places and levels in their music\, Apocalyptica opened up to some seemingly unorthodox methods and emotions to travel through the creative process. The result is an album which engages the listener in a myriad of feelings and emotions ranging from the raging thrash of ‘En Route To Mayhem’ to the ethereal shroud of ‘Ashes Of The Modern World’ and the cinematic scope of ‘Call My Name’\, something the band were hoping would happen. \n“It is tough to express without lyrics\, but in Cell-0 we found particles of our universe previously unknown to us.” explains Perttu “Millions of notes combine to create music just as millions of cells combine to create life\, and when you visualize the whole thing\, similar patterns appear. When you look at symphonic sheet music\, it looks similar to starry skies\, and when I look up at the sky and see the stars\, I also see them as potential notes. There are people suffering\, and people not treating our planet properly\, so there is anxiety at the state of the world. Many of the songs on Cell-0 refer to the blindness and greed of humanity and what we should be doing. We discussed during the writing that this was a very important series of emotions and observations to express\, especially with regards to ignorance. I started to believe that human ignorance should be treated as a deadly sin\, as it is behind so much of the bad stuff currently around us.” \n“Writing music\, at least for me\, is about filtering experiences through your personality\,” furthers Eicca\, who found himself listening to old favourites like Shostakovich\, Prokofiev and Gojira in and around the time of co-creating Cell-0. “I start to play something\, develop it and then just transfer my own emotions into the music. It varies a lot depending on the mood. These songs have so many layers\, and are so complex\, it’s not always easy to point out exactly what they are about. But I think that’s also the beauty of instrumental music\, that the listener always can feel free to experience the same songs in very\, very different ways. It’s also one reason why we don’t want to explain the songs before they’re experienced.” \nApocalyptica worked with renowned producer and engineer Andrew Scheps\, who has worked with the Red Hot Chili Peppers\, Lana Del Rey\, Metallica and Black Sabbath among others. He mixed the album at Monnow Valley Studios in South Wales\, UK\, and the band couldn’t be happier with the results. \n“We’ve admired Andrew’s work for a long time\, and he brought essential clarity to the mix.” says Perttu “Mixing cellos creates more problems than any other instrument with any other band. We all play the same instrument\, all in the same register\, and this time with Andrew\, we found perfect balance and clarity between us all. It has left us more than excited to experiment with these songs live.” \nAt once a smorgasbord\, symphony and crushing metallic masterpiece\, Cell-0 shows a band at the very peak of its unique and magical compositional powers. “We will be planning the full Cell-0 tour to be at the next level in terms of how we frame our performances\,” promises Eicca “because as you can probably guess\, we don’t know any other way.”

SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents The Struts "Across The Pond Tour"
DESCRIPTION:The third full-length from British rock band The Struts\, Strange Days came to life over the course of a charmed and frenzied burst of creativity last spring. After getting tested for COVID-19\, singer Luke Spiller\, guitarist Adam Slack\, bassist Jed Elliott\, and drummer Gethin Davies all moved into the Los Angeles home of Jon Levine\, a producer who worked extensively on their acclaimed sophomore effort YOUNG & DANGEROUS (including the album’s chart-climbing lead single “Body Talks”). Within just ten days of couch-crashing at Levine’s house\, The Struts had laid down nine original tracks and one masterful cover of a KISS B-side: a lean\, mean body of work that amounts to their most glorious output to date. \n“It was so much fun to make a record this way instead of getting everything done in between touring\, working with multiple producers in multiple countries\,” says Spiller. “We were all just burning to capture that excitement as much as we possibly could\, and at times it felt like the songs were literally just falling from the sky.” \nIn an organic turn of events for a band massively embraced by some of rock-and-roll history’s greatest icons—a feat that’s included opening for The Rolling Stones\, The Who\, and Guns N’ Roses—Strange Days finds The Struts joining forces with a formidable lineup of guest musicians: Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and Phil Collen\, Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes\, Tom Morello\, and Robbie Williams. Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Panic! At the Disco\, Arctic Monkeys\, Johnny Marr)\, the result is a powerhouse album that lifts The Struts’ glammed-up breed of modern rock to entirely new and wildly thrilling heights. \nKicking off with a magnificent bang\, Strange Days opens on its title track\, a sprawling and string-laced duet with Robbie Williams. “I was doing Quarantine Radio and Robbie hit me up out of the blue asking if we could talk\,” notes Spiller\, referring to the Instagram Live show launched by The Struts in the early days of lockdown. “We ended up Face-Timing for about two hours the first time we’d ever spoken\, talking about life and music and UFOs and everything else you can think of. I asked if he’d like to work together at some point\, and while we were making the album he graciously let us come over and record him singing on his front porch.” Despite its prescient title\, “Strange Days” took shape from a voice memo Spiller recorded on the band’s tour bus way back in summer 2019. Fused with a cabaret-inspired interlude Spiller had recently dreamed up\, the song ultimately evolved into the perfect vessel for the frontman’s force-of-nature voice: a tenderhearted epic that offers incredible solace in the most chaotic of times. \nSparked from a Britpop-leaning riff brought in by Slack\, the album’s potent lead single “Another Hit of Showmanship” feat. Albert Hammond Jr. centers on another poignant vocal performance from Spiller\, who deftly channels the tension between giving in to temptation and rising above your demons. After laying down the initial version of the track\, Spiller reached out to Hammond\, for whom the band opened on a series of 2018 solo shows. “‘Another Hit of Showmanship’ reminds me of being at a club night called Ramshackle years ago at the O2 Academy in Bristol\, where they’d play bands like The Libertines and Razorlight and Scissor Sisters\, and of course The Strokes\,” says Spiller. “I hit up Albert out of the blue and told him\, ‘We’ve got this song\, and I’m so excited to see what you would do with it.’ As soon as he got his hands on it\, he took it to a whole different level—it really just shows why he’s so brilliant at what he does.” \nThe most groovy-heavy work yet from The Struts\, Strange Days also delivers hip-shaking standouts like “I Hate How Much I Want You”: a hot-and-bothered stomper graced with a scorching guitar solo from Phil Collen and Joe Elliott’s high-voltage vocals. Another explosive moment\, “All Dressed Up (With Nowhere To Go)” unfolds in snarling power chords and exquisitely cheeky lyrics (its opening salvo: “You look like a movie star/On Sunday morning”). “That one’s based around the idea of being in love with your motorcycle—there’s a bit of innuendo to it\,” says Spiller\, whose own bike inspired the track. “The whole concept of being all dressed up with nowhere to go seems especially relevant the moment.” Meanwhile\, “Wild Child” makes for a fierce and filthy anthem\, infinitely supercharged by Tom Morello’s blistering guitar work. And on the beautifully weary “Burn It Down\,” The Struts slip into a bittersweet mood\, serving up a slow-burning ballad that sounds straight from the sessions for Exile on Main St. \nThe sole cover song on Strange Days\, “Do You Love Me” finds The Struts updating a fantastically sleazy track first recorded by KISS in 1976 and remade in 1980 by Girl (a late-’70s/early-’80s British glam-metal band that\, incidentally\, featured Phil Collen on guitar). “I was so in love with Girl’s version of ‘Do You Love Me’ and thought the simplicity of it was amazing\,” says Spiller. “I wanted to give it an even bigger sound for our album—something way more aggressive\, completely balls-to-the-wall.” \nIn their supreme handling of “Do You Love Me\,” The Struts again claim their rightful place in the lineage of rock-and-roll hellraisers. Formed in Derby\, England\, in 2012\, the band quickly drew a major following with their outrageous live show\, and later made their debut with Have You Heard (a 2015 EP whose lead single “Could Have Been Me” hit #1 on Spotify’s viral chart). Before they’d even put out their first album\, the band opened for The Rolling Stones before a crowd of 80\,000 in Paris and toured the U.S. on a string of sold-out shows. With their full-length debut Everybody Wants arriving in 2016\, The Struts released YOUNG & DANGEROUS in 2018\, soon after wrapping up a North American tour with Foo Fighters. Having toured incessantly since their formation\, The Struts have also taken the stage at many the world’s biggest music festivals\, including Lollapalooza\, Governors Ball\, Isle of Wight\, and many more. \nAs Spiller reveals\, the making of Strange Days was a period of joyful productivity. “Every day I’d wake up at about 7 a.m.\, get three venti Americanos delivered to the house\, go out to the backyard and smoke a couple of spliffs\, and listen to the voice memos I’d recorded at the sessions the day before\,” he recalls. “After the first four days or so we hit a bit of a wall\, so we decided to get some beers in and just stay in the pool all day—and the day after that we knocked out three whole songs.” Throughout Strange Days\, that kinetic energy manifests in the album’s unbridled spirit\, an element that makes every track exhilarating. “I think because we’d wanted to make an album this way for years\, all that excitement and hunger led to an immediate sort of magic once we started working on it\,” says Spiller. “It was undoubtedly a magical ten days for us—and I hope when people hear the album\, it gives them a taste of that magic too.”

SUMMARY:The Paramount Comedy Series Presents: Jim Breuer "The Freedom of Laughter Tour"
DESCRIPTION:Not long after Jim Breuer did his first official standup gig in Clearwater\, Florida\, in 1989\, industry folks began asking him\, “What’s your point of view?” “I don’t know…” He searched for a meaningful response to a ridiculous question. “To make people laugh?” \nThe freewheeling\, New York bred comic storyteller – who made the list of Comedy Central’s “100 Greatest Standups of All Time” – is hotter than ever\, a global touring sensation and regular presence on radio and television whose rabid audience\, he’s thrilled to note\, is filled with “lifetimers.” Once folks see him live\, they’re hooked. Breuer estimates that 78% of his fans have seen him “five\, six\, seven” times. It’s becoming a family thing\, with parents even bringing young teens to see the family man and father of three daughters\, all providing genius “dad” material for his sets. Having evolved both personally and professionally since the beginning. \nBreuer’s pleased to say he’s been F-word free for ten years and counting. Breuer came to national attention during his seasons on Saturday Night Live (1995-98)\, a rebuilding era whose cast featured Will Ferrell\, David Spade and Norm Macdonald. But don’t call him “Goat Boy” (one of his characters on SNL) or ask him to do his Joe Pesci impression. Those things are eons ago. Some even still associate him with “Half Baked\,” a stoner comedy flick from around that time that starred Dave Chappelle and featured cameos by Willie Nelson\, Snoop Dogg and Tommy Chong. \nThe fans who got into Breuer in the new millennium were drawn into his whirlwind journey through his Comedy Central specials such as “Hardcore” (2002) and “Let’s Clear The Air” (2009)\, one of the highest rated comedy specials in the network’s history – popularly known as his “coming out party” as a dad\, cleaning up his act and focusing on the fun and foibles of family life. His next special “And Laughter For All” (2013)\, became the highest rated original comedy special on EPIX to date\, earning it’s spot as a family favorite for it’s relatable and multi- generational humor. His latest special “Comic Frenzy” (2015) is currently available on Amazon Prime. \nMany of Breuer’s newer fans know him from the multitude of hilarious hours he’s spent as a guest on Sirius XM’s “The Howard Stern Show.” Howard’s hosted some of pop culture’s biggest comedy icons over the past 30 years\, yet Breuer gets people telling him he’s their favorite guest ever. “Howard’s audiences know comedy\,” he says. “If they come and I’m not funny\, they’re not coming back.” That’s never happened and never going to. \nBreuer was also the host of “Fridays with Jim Breuer” Sirius XM\, originally known as “Breuer Unleashed.” He currently hosts a podcast called “The Jim Breuer Podcast\,” which is available on iTunes and JimBreuer.com. Over the years\, Breuer has been something of a multi-media sensation currently appearing alongside Kevin James on “Kevin Can Wait” on CBS as well as popular films “Zookeeper\,” “Dick\,” “Titan A.E.” and “Beer League”; hosting MTV’s popular “Beach House” and VH1’s “Web Junk 20”; and being featured on “Comedy Jam\,” “This Is Not Happening\,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien\,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart\,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson\,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live\,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon\,” and “The Marriage Ref.” \nSince 2015\, he’s shared his dual passions for comedy and baseball (particularly his New York Mets) with thousands via his video recaps of games that he posts on Facebook. Their viral impact has been massive\, with clips airing on the MLB Network and ESPN Sportscenter among others\, and even inspiring Mets fans in other cities to hang with Breuer to root their team on. A die-hard metalhead\, Breuer made his musical debut\, Songs From The Garage in 2016. Produced by Rob Caggiano (Anthrax\, Volbeat) the album features tracks such as “Raising Teenage Girls\,” the throwback anthem “Old School” and “Mr. Rock n’ Roll” with the one and only Brian Johnson of AC/DC. \nAll Breuer aficionados know that family is everything to him\, and his mission is to share the highs and lows\, find the humor in the day to day\, laughing with the triumphs and tragedies and using comedy as a tool to conquer fear – as he did when posting videos of his wife going through cancer treatments the past few years. In 2008\, \nBreuer set out for his “Breuniversity Tour” with his 85-year-old father and a film crew. The footage that was captured blended together to create “The Jim Breuer Road Journals\,” which showcased what life is like on the road with a comedian and his father. Videos from that tour also sparked the making of his documentary “More Than Me\,” which was shown at the 2009 Montreal Film Festival. In line with his love of family. “Comic Frenzy” focused on what Breuer’s life (and all our lives) truly consist of: dealing with the elderly\, becoming our parents’ caretakers and what it takes to be a “marriage warrior.” \n“I’m a deep-rooted family guy with hardcore blue-collar roots\,” he says. “My father was a World War II vet and my mom lost her first husband to WWII. As a child growing up in Valley Stream\, New York\, I lived in low income housing\, then an attic apartment\, to eventually moving down the street into a home of our own\, always surrounded by faith and love. My career reached a new level when I started to raise a family of my own and realized I should stick to what I know\, what everyone could relate to no matter their socio-economic status. My oldest daughter just went to college and we’ve dealt these past few years with mortality issues\, and I’m just there to find the funny in that. It all started with ‘Let’s Clear the Air\,’ which focused on me being a new father who came from another world and who wasn’t prepared for the responsibilities at all.” \nThe crazy state of the world today makes Breuer’s upcoming 2018 tour Jim Breuer Live all the more essential\, as we seek perspective and comic relief from the day to day insanity that drives our 24.7 news cycle and social media. Breuer’s set will be decidedly non-political\, but he will have much to impart about the foolishness of ruining our lives over media-generated frenzies that we have no control over. “My huge focus is\, listen\, stop getting caught up in the hoopla the news\, politics and all that jazz\,” he says. “If every day you wake up and you’re watching five to six hours of it\, it starts to darken your soul. If you spent even ten percent of that time on your wife\, husband\, child or someone else you love\, your personal life would get better and you could help so many people. I’m here to say that life isn’t that horrendous. Can you still eat? Can you still watch your 60” plasma TV? Call me when you have to eat a squirrel for breakfast\, okay? Do something you can control that’s good\, because you can’t fight hate with more hate. Let’s concentrate on the most important things in life.” \n“My job as a comic is to talk about the many great loves of my life\, recognizing that yes\, we are all on borrowed time but we can still enjoy life with a passion and not get caught up in all the madness\,” Breuer adds. “There are always things that can become an obstacle to our happiness\, and the big three for me that I smack into most are divisions in the family\, financial struggles and health issues. For me\, there’s no better feeling in the world than making someone laugh and knowing that I’ve inspired or healed someone. It’s nice when people tell me I’m funny\, but the ones that keep me going are the ones who come up to me and say\, ‘Can I just tell you\, I just lost my mom\, and you healed me. That’s the first time I’ve laughed in ages.’ Or ‘My wife and I were fighting\, we just experienced death. We knew seeing you was going to help. Thank you. We needed this so much.’ We’re not here for very long\, and we’re all stuck here together. Everybody needs to laugh and be uplifted. We’re here to take care of others. I’m on a mission to lift you in the only way I know how.”

SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes
DESCRIPTION:In a business where success is defined as getting a second single and longevity measured in nanoseconds\, simply surviving for thirty-plus years is a rare accomplishment. But Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes have not only survived\, they have flourished: more than thirty albums\, several Eps and a box set; thousands of live performances around the globe; a legion of dedicated and enthusiastic fans; dozens of classic songs; a release named by Rolling Stone one of the “top 100 albums of the 70s and 80s.” \nSouthside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes emerged from the New Jersey shore scene in 1974\, and though they carried over a significant influence (and some key personnel) from Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band\, the Jukes evolved as more of a white R&B horn band in the Memphis Stax Records tradition. Organized by singer John Lyon\, guitarist/songwriter Steve Van Zandt (who decamped for the E Street Band in 1975\, but continued to produce\, manage\, and write songs for the Jukes) and Richie Rosenberg\, the band is well known for high-energy shows and no-holds-barred songs\, including “I Don’t Wanna Go Home\,” “Havin’ a Party\,” “The Fever\,” “Talk to Me\,” “Trapped Again\,” and “This Time It’s For Real.” \nStill tinged with the exuberant rhythm and blues feel that is the Jukes’ trademark\, and loaded with the driving sound of the legendary Jukes horn section\, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes continue to expound their signature Jersey Shore sound – all for the sheer joy of it.

SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents Ashley McBryde
DESCRIPTION:Ashley McBryde cut her teeth playing country songs in rural biker bars – and it shows. Her 2018 major label debut Girl Going Nowhere (Warner Music Nashville) charmed the New York Times\, NPR\, Rolling Stone\, Paste\, The Washington Post\, and more\, all en route to landing a GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album. McBryde closed out 2019 with ACM New Female Artist\, CMT Breakout Artist of the Year\, a New Artist of the Year win at the 53rd Annual CMA Awards and two nominations for the 2020 GRAMMYs for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for “Girl Goin’ Nowhere.” Her follow-up Never Will\, released April 3\, was tagged by Rolling Stone as one of the most anticipated of the year alongside NPR\, who also ranked her lead Top 10 RIAA Gold-Certified single “One Night Standards” as one of the best songs of 2019. Produced once again by Jay Joyce\, Never Will reveals the witty\, confessional\, detail-driven songwriting addressing a wide spectrum of blue-collar Southern women’s experience introduced on Girl Going Nowhere is still here\, but perhaps even sharper\, earning McBryde a 2021 GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Album\, along with 2021 ACM nominations for Album of the Year\, Female Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for lead single “One Night Standards.” The music itself is stadium-ready rock-and-roll with a bluegrass wink or two and country music’s storytelling heart––and McBryde\, no longer new\, is the music’s ordained and highly capable standard bearer. DESCRIPTION:One wouldn’t think that in a career spanning more than 25 years and some 20 live and studio albums\, there could possibly be anything left for a band to accomplish that could be considered a first. And when that band is Gov’t Mule\, a group known for pushing the parameters while melding a variety of genres — rock\, R&B\, jam\, funk\, jazz\, and practically everything in-between — it’s even more astonishing to think there’s anything that hasn’t already been attempted. \nIndeed\, Gov’t Mule have never been known to rest on their laurels or shy away from a new challenge. Theirs is a sound that feeds off spontaneity and improvisation\, a signature style that pays little heed to expectation\, predictability\, or needless repetition. Consequently\, it’s not so much surprising that they’ve opted to record an album focused solely on the blues\, but rather the fact that they haven’t dared to do it before. \nThat said\, the band’s upcoming new album\, Heavy Load Blues (due November 12 on Fantasy Records) marks yet another milestone in Gov’t Mule’s remarkable trajectory. Yet\, it’s also been a project that guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and consistent helmsman Warren Haynes has set his sights on undertaking for quite some time. \n“For me\, personally\, it’s kind of been on my list of things to do for years\,” Haynes notes. “And for the last few years\, I’ve been thinking\, I want to do it sooner rather than later\, but I didn’t know if it was gonna be a solo album or a Gov’t Mule record. That was an unanswered question for me for a long time because I didn’t know if Matt (Abts; drums)\, Danny (Louis; keyboards\, guitar\, backing vocals)\, and Jorgen (Carlsson; bass) wanted to do a traditional blues album. But while talking about recording a new Gov’t Mule record\, our manager Stefani mentioned that in fact\, she thought we should do a blues record\, and it kind of made me think\, yeah\, maybe it should be a new band record as opposed to a solo record. We play some traditional blues on stage from time to time and although it’s usually never more than a few songs per show\, our approach to the blues is unique and based on our collective chemistry as a band. In hindsight\, I’m so glad that it turned out this way.” \nAlthough Heavy Load Blues can technically be considered a studio album\, it was recorded live in the studio.“We started thinking that\, well\, we can’t go out and perform due to the pandemic and yet we’ve got all this time on our hands\,” Haynes explains. “I had been doing a lot of writing\, so we might as well record as much as we can. We decided to record two records at the same time\, which would mean finding a place where we could pull off two entirely different set-ups with two different sets of equipment. We found this place that I had worked in the ‘90s called The Power Station New England\, and it’s a replica of the original\, famous Power Station studios in New York City where a lot of wonderful records were made. We set up in two different adjoining rooms to make two completely different sounding records. This particular album was recorded in what we called ‘the blues room.’ It had lower ceilings and it was a smaller space\, so we just turned it into something resembling a little blues club and set up like we were actually playing on stage together. We used monitors instead of headphones\, which meant we were more or less married to what we played. It was recorded virtually live in the studio because that’s the sound we wanted to capture. We used a lot of first takes\, and even if we did multiple takes\, they were done back-to-back. We would just kind of go with the vibe and add to the repertoire as we went along.” \nRecorded on analog tape\, the band utilized vintage guitars\, amps\, and other equipment to ensure an authentic sound.\n“For the most part\, everything we used was older than me\,” Haynes laughs. “It was an excuse to try a bunch of cool combinations. Plus\, it more or less helped dictate our direction. We would plug these old guitars into some weird old amps that I’d never tried before and the sound would end up influencing our approach to the songs.” \nIn one particular situation\, during the recording of the song “Make It Rain\,” they hit on a happy accident that occurred as they were laying down the track\, an unexpected element that actually helped enhance the song’s determined and defiant delivery. Haynes says it was a fortuitous situation that caught them totally by surprise.“I had brought in this old Fender spring reverb unit that I wanted to use on my guitar sound\,” he recalls. “They can be pretty finicky. If the stage isn’t solid\, or somebody’s jumping up and down\, it reacts by making this crazy reverb vibration that comes through the amp. I had intentionally set it up on the studio floor to make it kind of shockproof\, but what we didn’t allow for was some radio frequencies that randomly interfered and set it off. So\, it started making these weird sounds that sounded like thunder. We were in the middle of what turned out to be the best take\, and it began doing that throughout the whole thing. As it turned out\, it happened in these key spots in the song. For example\, the first time I say ‘make it rain\,’ it went off. We’re all looking at each other and kind of halfway laughing and halfway wondering\, ‘are we gonna be able to take that out? Because it was a really good take.’ When we were finished\, John Paterno\, the engineer\, and co-producer\, said\, ‘Why don’t you come in here and listen?’ When I walked in\, my first question was\, are we gonna be able to use it with all that noise? And he said\, ‘Oh\, we have to use it!’ It actually sounded like we planned it that way.” \nEncompassing an even mix of Haynes’ originals and revered covers originally made famous by the likes of Howlin’ Wolf\, Elmore James\, Junior Wells\, Ann Peebles\, Bobby “Blue” Bland\, and even Tom Waits and the Animals\, Heavy Load Blues provides a sense of authenticity maintained throughout the album’s thirteen tracks. An additional six studio tracks and two live tracks\, including another Haynes original and covers originally by Savoy Brown\, Sonny Boy Williamson\, Muddy Waters\, Otis Rush\, and more\, will appear on a deluxe edition. \n“I’m actually surprised that I had written as many blues songs as I had during the pandemic because I don’t tend to write a ton of traditional blues type material\,” Haynes reflects. “I have written a handful through the years\, but it worked out great because\, from the beginning\, the intent was to make this more of a traditional blues record and not just have a blues influence on it.” \nThe first track to be released from the album\, “Heavy Load\,” sets a different tone from previous Mule recordings. An ominous acoustic blues number laid out at a deliberate tempo and highlighted by Haynes’ mournful vocal and supple yet deliberate riffing\, it’s a number he claims to have been working on for several years\, but which he didn’t finish until shortly before the band entered the studio.\n“We tracked it\, just me and Danny\,” he recalls. “Danny played acoustic guitar and I played acoustic guitar and sang. It’s the last song that we tracked\, and it really\, really turned out great. It’s very traditional sounding\, as is the recording.” \nAnother of the many standout tracks\, the Junior Wells standard “Snatch It Back and Hold It” allowed the band to freely cover a classic while sandwiching a spontaneous jam called “Hold It Back” in the middle of a soulful\, stirring interpretation that was given a decidedly funky groove.\n“We had never played that middle section prior to recording it\,” Haynes insists. “While we were working up ‘Snatch It Back\,’ we just ran through all the key sections and when we got to the instrumental part\, we did a very brief talk through about how it might go. It was virtually a jam\, and in that sense\, it kind of referenced what we normally do on stage. We get an idea and run with it to see where it winds up. It never turns out exactly like you plan it\, which is great because if it is good\, it’s usually better than it would have been had you planned it a certain way.” \nIn that regard\, Haynes notes that while several titles may sound familiar to blues enthusiasts\, the band often opted to put its own spin on them. “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” is an obvious example. Haynes’ nimble guitar riffs are played out over a solid foundation of organ and rhythm\, resulting in a kind of funk-like finesse. \n“‘I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home’ was originally recorded by Ann Peebles\, but the first version I ever heard was by a New Orleans singer named Johnny Adams\,” Haynes mentions. “That’s one of the few songs on this record that we have previously played live. Through the years\, we’ve worked up a really cool version of it\, and so we decided to include it. We thought\, ‘well\, let’s play it a couple of times through\, and if we get a great take\, we’ll use it\,’ which we did. Then there’s the Howlin Wolf song\, ‘I Asked Her for Water\, She Gave Me Gasoline’ which we decided to do up-tempo and funky\, which makes it a lot different than the original version. It’s probably the heaviest track on the record\, and coincidentally\, one of the first things we recorded. We were still in the early stages of dialing in sounds and trying to decide on different guitar and amp combinations. To me\, it sounds different than the rest of the record. It has a similar nastiness to the original recording. As it was\, we kind of went for a different sound for each song in an odd sort of way. That was part of the beauty of it.” \nOf course\, those familiar with Gov’t Mule’s MO know that improvisation and experimentation have always been key to the band’s approach. Although Haynes admits that it can be difficult to capture that freewheeling delivery in a studio setting\, he feels that in fact they’ve managed to accomplish that with this album. \n“We take a different approach in the studio than a lot of bands do\,” Haynes muses. “Most bands\, I would say\, go into the studio to make the record that they envisioned then later they try to figure out how to perform the songs live. We’re kind of the opposite. We’re trying to conjure up in the studio what we know we’re capable of doing live. We get ourselves into a headspace and a comfortable place where we can tap into our own sound and that thing that happens magically when we’re together on stage. And\, of course\, those moments happen more and more the longer you stay together. We utilize a lot of the philosophy that we have developed over the years which is just to let things go and allow whatever happens to happen while trying not to overthink it. Any energy that’s lacking from having no audience\, we make up for by having multiple chances to do things over if we want to. The tracks wind up being kind of like blueprints for what will later happen live. For the most part\, we don’t think of them as the definitive version. Some songs may be\, but others\, — the ones that open themselves up to improvisation — not as much. Once you perform them live\, they kind of grow and grow and grow. A year later\, three years later\, they take on another life.” \nIn essence\, Heavy Load Blues found them skipping ahead and aiming for those final results even at the outset. “We went in with the specific goal of capturing the sound of the band playing live\,” Haynes maintains. “The only way we could do that was to set up the way we did\, and it not only enabled us to feel comfortable and play what we needed to play\, but to capture a sound that fits the music and the specific sound of an era. It sounds like what you hear in your head when you think about those classic recordings.” Haynes says that those were the influences that made an indelible imprint on him early on. “My two older brothers had great taste in music and began steering me towards blues at a very young age. I was a huge B.B. King fan — both of his voice and his guitar playing. I also loved Howlin’ Wolf\, Freddie King and Albert King. I had a guitar teacher that told me\, if you only study the three Kings — meaning Freddie\, B.B. and Albert — you could spend an entire lifetime just doing that. That really stuck with me. I listened a lot to all three of those guys. Muddy Waters was a big influence. Elmore James was a huge influence. I loved Otis Rush. I loved Junior Wells. All the people that we wound up covering on this record were major influences. Also\, Son House\, who we’ve covered previously\, was one of my all-time favorites. And\, of course\, everybody studies Robert Johnson\, who we’ve covered previously as well.” \nOf course\, there’s a fine line between interpretation and originality. Haynes says that when it came to the covers\, Gov’t Mule treat each offering on a song by song basis. “This album gave us a mission\,” Haynes notes. “Although in some way it was ‘anything goes\,’ we wanted to stay true to the spirit of the blues in a traditional sense. It’s not a blues/rock record – it’s a blues record. We wanted it sonically to sound different from a normal Gov’t Mule record and we wanted there to be boundaries. It’s hard to know where you draw the line on some of those things. It’s more of an unwritten rule that’s decided moment by moment. In some cases\, the original recordings had a lot to do with the approach we took. And in other cases\, we took the songs to a place far removed from the original. Some of them we treated a little more traditionally\, and some we stretched out and took more of a Gov’t Mule approach.” \nIn another first\, the band partnered with a new co-producer and engineer. It was the first time that they worked with Paterno\, and while it might have added another element of risk\, Haynes says that the end results overcame any uncertainties. \n“We were talking about having me produce the album\,” Haynes recalls. “If that was going to be the case\, then I wanted to get somebody who was really qualified to be in the engineering chair. John did a fabulous job. He and I had had a lot of conversations over the phone\, prior to going into the studio\, about conceptually what this album was going to be about and what it was going to entail. A lot of that fell on him\, technically — to figure out how it was all going to work — and somewhere along the line his role changed from engineer to that of a co-producer.” Ultimately\, Haynes says he’s completely pleased with how both the process and the project turned out. \n“I’m really glad that we made the decision as a band to make a blues record. Every one of us was excited about the concept and the change in direction. It forced us to do things completely differently than we’ve ever done in the past. When we would move into the blues room after recording Mule songs all day in the bigger room\, we were just kind of shutting our brains off\, and letting go and playing the blues. And it turned out to be music that only Gov’t Mule could make.
