DESCRIPTION:We are deeply honored to welcome some very special Friends of the Coltrane home for a deeply cool listening party and discussion about John and Alice Coltrane and their Dix Hills Home\, which is being transformed into a museum and cultural center. \nWhen: Saturday\, March 28 @6pm\nYasuhiro “Fuji” Fujioka is a Board member of the Friends of The Coltrane Home in Dix Hills\, President of the Coltrane House of Osaka\, and owns the Kimono shop\, “Fujioka.” He is also a freelance jazz writer/ producer/ photographer/ educator and the author of four books on the subject of John Coltrane.\nHollis King is the former vice president and creative director at the Verve Music Group\, the largest jazz record label in the world. He has worked with some of the greatest musicians of all time\, and has himself received numerous achievement awards and citations.\nThis is a Free\, Open Door Event. DESCRIPTION:Firefly Steve Caputo announces the debut of his book\, “Picturing HOPE- Harnessing Our Positive Energy to conquer fear\, grief and depression” right here at the Firefly Gallery (90 Main St.\, Northport) with an exhibit of photographic images and excerpts from the book. The exhibit runs Friday\, March 14th through Thursday\, March 27th. \n“Picturing HOPE” chronicles Steve’s journey through a recent cancer diagnosis using his images and words to blaze the trail. But the book is more than just a hitchhiker’s guide to the cancer galaxy. It’s a roadmap to maintaining a hopeful outlook by recognizing the beauty and the blessings that surround us each day. Steve’s visual and attitudinal perspectives illuminate the path for those battling the fear\, anxiety and depression that are often encountered on this journey. Along the way\, he manages to offer a message that can inspire us all. This collection includes over 80 photos and essays and affirms the strong throughline of hope and positivity that is the hallmark of Steve’s work. \nCome meet the author in person at a reception and book signing event scheduled for Sunday\, March 16th\, from 2-5PM.

DESCRIPTION:New York is filled with forsaken buildings\, each ravaged by the exploits of modernization\, each having fascinating histories. This photographic essay explores over 40 of the most evocative abandoned sites in the Empire State and puts their individual stories in the larger context of New York’s historical legacy. Photographer and author John Lazzaro traveled the state\, capturing what’s left of such places before they are inevitably swept away by time. Divided by region\, these sites\, ranging from the Catskills’ once-vibrant vacation destinations to Long Island’s melancholy psychiatric centers\, reveal deeper social\, cultural\, and political changes that lead to their decay. Works featuring cows\, and other farm life\, as well as those honoring the Cow Harbor Race and festival will be considered. All original media is acceptable\, such as drawing\, painting\, photography\, printmaking\, mixed media\, sculpture\, collage\, fabric work\, glasswork\, jewelry and digital media. Entries must be original artworks (no artwork created in a workshop or class under instruction of a teacher)\, no reproductions (with the exception of photography). Maximum size of pieces (including framing) is 30” x 40”. Each artist may submit one entry for consideration for $35. Artists can submit up to three additional pieces for $5 fee each. Up to two pieces of artwork from each selected artist will be chosen to be part of the exhibition. Please indicate whether the work is framed or unframed. \nThe exhibition will hang September 4 – 25\, 2022. Artists from throughout the USA are invited to apply. Artists that are interested in carving a woodblock of at least 24 by 36 inches are invited to participate. First\, you submit a design for consideration. If selected\, you’ll have two months to carve a woodblock based on your submission. \nApplications are due 6/30. \nOn 8/20 and 8/21\, BIG INK will transform the art studio in the gallery into a print studio featuring The Big Tuna: a custom-designed giant mobile press. The public is invited to attend\, witness the spectacle\, and learn more about the process. The event spans two days with 8-10 artists printing their works of art each day. \nThe printed pieces will then be on display in the Darcy Arts Center on the second floor of Firefly Art Gallery through 8/21-9/3/2022. \nSubmission fee is $35. DESCRIPTION:(photo pending) \nHave you ever wondered what it would be like to be an illustrator? Would you like to illustrate your own book cover? Poetry? Poster for an event? \nPlease join us for a two-session workshop as we explore “What is Illustration?” through the art of professional illustrators. Elements of design\, color theory and the relationship between images and text will be discussed. Students will then create their own illustration using their choice of media and style. \nThe $100 fee covers both class sessions\, 7/30 and 8/6. Students are to provide their own materials.\nFor registration and details\, please email Renee at reneereichert@icloud.com. \nAbout the Teacher: Renee Reichert\, award winning artist & Illustrator\, is known for her lush\, velvety pastels which often take on both a narrative and a fantasy quality. SUMMARY:Firefly Artists Watercolor Masters Series: Fabio Cembranelli
DESCRIPTION:The Firefly Artists are pleased to announce this 4th installment in our Watercolor Masters Series championed by Firefly Jan Guarino\, a lifelong learner who loves to bring artists who inspire her in to teach you!!! \nFabio Cembranelli\, a renowned Brazilian artist\, started painting at university\, where he studied architecture. After graduating\, he took drawing\, sculpture and photography courses in his home town of São Paolo\, and continued his studies in Europe and US during the 90s. He still lives and works in São Paulo. His paintings feature in exhibitions and collections worldwide\, \nFabio currently works in two artistic fields: watercolours and acrylics\, and his unique and luminous floral watercolours are known internationally.\n​\nExplaining why he has chosen transparent watercolour as his favorite medium\, he says\, “What compels me to paint with this approach is the possibility of painting quickly. It suits my personality best — the fluidity of the medium provides a unique sensation of unexpected colour mixing\, particularly when I define only the main masses and allow the unpredictable to happen on the rest of the paper. Timing is quite important in my method. I lean intuitively toward realism\, but the right speed forces me to create diffused effects and shapes. I love painting flowers and landscapes in watercolour and I’m always enchanted by the attempt to capture the contrast between loose and definitive edges\, as well as light and shadow effects.” \nFabio teaches painting techniques in his studio\, in art galleries\, as well as workshops and painting holidays throughout Brazil and abroad. Nowadays his work is focused on plein air painting\, observing and studying nature firsthand at inspiring outdoor locations. \nIn the upcoming years he will be tutoring several workshops in Europe\, Asia and North America. He is also a regular contributor to various painting magazines and also works as illustrator for some publishing in South America. \n(Please note that the attached image is a artist sample only\, and not what will be painted during the workshop)
