SUMMARY:EastLine Theatre presents Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz
DESCRIPTION:Nilo Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize winner comes to Westbury in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Free tickets with a refundable reservation. \n‘I have dreams and they are full of white snow\,\nand Anna Karenina is dancing waltzes with Vronsky.\nThen I see them in a little room\,\nand all the snow melts from the heat of their bodies.’ \nTampa\, Florida\, 1929. In a Cuban–American cigar factory\, where cigars are still rolled by hand and “lectors” are employed to educate and entertain the workers\, the arrival of a new lector is cause for celebration. But when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina\, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners\, for whom Tolstoy\, the tropics\, and the American dream prove a volatile combination. \nEastLine Theatre in association with Westbury Arts will present Nilo Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Anna in the Tropics this September\, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. \nThis production is part of EastLine’s Theatre for All initiative.

SUMMARY:EastLine Theatre's Production of "Anna in the Tropics" at Westbury Arts
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize\, set in Ybor City\, Florida\, in 1929. Here\, a cadre of Cuban-Americans\, primarily female cigar factory laborers who hand roll each cigar await the arrival of their new lector\, Juan Julian. The lector serves to entertain the workers by reading great stories. Most of the group is overjoyed by the presence of this new\, handsome lector\, but when he starts reading from the Russian classic\, Anna Karenina\, the scandalous lives of Tolstoy’s characters start to intertwine with the lives of his listeners. As Juan Julian reads\, the hot\, humid Florida summer strangely starts to resemble the cold Russian winter of Tolstoy. Infidelity\, money problems\, and violence spring to the surface as the owners and workers grapple with their newfound understanding of life\, love and business.

SUMMARY:EastLine Theatre presents In the Next Room\, or the vibrator play by Sarah Ruhl
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Ruhl’s romantic comedy about the invention of the vibrator comes to Lindenhurst this August. \n“It used to be that it would take hours to produce a paroxysm in our patients\nbut thanks to this new electrical instrument we shall be done in a matter of minutes!” \nSet at the dawn of the age of electricity in a seemingly perfect\, well-to-do Victorian home\, proper gentleman and scientist Dr. Givings has innocently invented an extraordinary new device for treating “hysteria” in women (and occasionally men): the vibrator. Adjacent to the doctor’s laboratory\, his young and energetic wife Catherine tries to tend to their newborn daughter – and wonders exactly what is going on in the next room. \nEastLine Theatre in association with the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts will present Pulitzer finalist Sarah Ruhl’s Tony-nominated In the Next Room\, or the vibrator play this August in Lindenhurst. \nThis event is made possible through the support of the Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs and the Alliance of Resident Theatres / New York. \nIn the Next Room\, or the vibrator play by Sarah Ruhl is directed by Danny Higgins\, presented by EastLine Theatre in partnership with the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts\, with support from the Suffolk County Office of Cultural Affairs\, intimacy direction by Francesca Betancourt\, stage management by Julianna Frasca\, and with costumes by Lynn Ciorciari. \nThe cast of In the Next Room\, or the vibrator play features Martin Balaguer\, Bryanna Bradley\, Margaret Brigid\, Paul DeFilippo\, John Dorcic\, Julie Fergus\, and Nicole Savin. \nEastLine Theatre is a nonprofit theatre company that BroadwayWorld calls ‘Long Island’s best kept secret’. EastLine aims to create theatre in unlikely spaces while re-examining the canon\, exploring modern plays\, and bringing original works to the attention of the community. \nEastLine Theatre returns to the BACCA Center after February’s sold-out production of Intimate Apparel. In summer 2021\, EastLine toured Long Island parks with an acclaimed production of Romeo & Juliet. In recent years\, EastLine has produced Prospero (Live)\, an original musical based on The Tempest; the Long Island premiere of Paula Vogel’s Indecent; a newly-commissioned adaptation of Antigone; a sold-out run of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus in a tiny blackbox space; and a production of Treasure Island that BroadwayWorld said was ‘bursting at the seams with imagination’. \nEastLine Theatre is a proud member of the Huntington Arts Council and the Alliance of Resident Theatres / New York.
