SUMMARY:The Heckscher Museum of Art presents Robert Graham Carter: The Art of Reflection
DESCRIPTION:Robert Graham Carter (American\, b. 1938) is a visual artist best known for his mixed-media works including commanding drawings; sculptural\, high-relief paintings; and whimsical works on wood. Carter’s figurative compositions routinely speak to systemic societal issues with a specificity derived from his lived experiences. Created over the last sixty years drawing influence from his upbringing in the Jim Crow South\, Robert’s figurative compositions balance personal and universal truths\, with a focus on topics pertinent to the African-American condition: the joy and importance of family\, the legacy of segregation\, the charm of childhood\, the spiritual and corporal force that is the Black church\, and the impression of Blackface on American culture. This 2025 presentation explores his studio practice and his unique painterly voice as it traces overarching impactful themes from his lifelong career. \nConceived in direct collaboration with the artist\, this exhibition is curated by Sarah Battle\, associate projects manager of academic programs and publications\, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts\, National Gallery of Art\, with support from Camille Pratt\, artist\, and digitization specialist\, Digital Transitions-Pixel Acuity.

SUMMARY:The Long Island Maritime Museum (LIMM) - Call to Artists!
DESCRIPTION:The Long Island Maritime Museum (LIMM) is inviting local artists to share their creative talents for an art auction with a local cause! We are raising funds for the 2024/2025 restoration of a National Historic Landmark\, Priscilla\, an 1888 oyster sloop and the oldest and only sailing workboat to survive from the Great South Bay oyster fleet. Each winter\, Priscilla is lovingly maintained by her crew and shipwrights\, receiving fresh paint and light repair work. Every 20 years\, she requires a more intensive restoration. Beginning in October of 2024\, work began to replace her deck\, mast\, and to refasten her hull—work required to maintain her Coast Guard certification. While the Museum has raised a significant amount of funding towards the required work\, there is still more needed to reach our goal and to keep this treasure available for the public to enjoy. \nThe wooden mast that’s being replaced has been carefully cut into beautiful cross-sections\, or slices. Artist volunteers are invited to use these slices to create a piece of maritime-themed artwork. The slices are still available for pickup at the LIMM\, Mondays through Fridays\, 10 AM – 4 PM. \nIf you are interested in participating but can’t pick up a slice during weekday hours (M-F\, 10-4)\, call us to explore other options! \nFinished pieces can be dropped off to the museum no later than Thursday\, 7/31. \nDetails regarding the exhibit opening and auction will be announced. \nLong Island Maritime Museum – 88 West Ave\, West Sayville\, NY 11796  (631) 854-4974
