SUMMARY:The Heckscher Museum: Raise the Roof: The Home in Art
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the spaces we inhabit\, Raise the Roof encompasses more than 50 artworks from The Heckscher Museum’s collection that reflect the many meanings of home. The house is a site where daily life unfolds\, work takes place\, identities cohere and shift\, memories form\, and imagination take flight. The art on view in Raise the Roof: The Home in Art demonstrates the central role that our homes have played in our lives and in art. \nRaise the Roof debuts significant recent additions to the collection by contemporary artists such as Courtney M. Leonard\, Kenji Nakahashi\, Becky Suss\, and Stella Waitzkin\, and features a promised gift by sculptor Ed Haddaway. Never-before-exhibited photographs by Larry Fink and prints by Robert Dash are featured as are artworks by Romare Bearden\, Salvador Dali\, Olafur Eliasson\, Miriam Schapiro\, and Esphyr Slobodkina. Each artist’s work embodies home in a singular and intimate way.

SUMMARY:The Heckscher Museum: Viewfinders: Photographers Frame Nature
DESCRIPTION:Since the invention of the camera\, photographers have enthralled viewers by interpreting the natural world. Viewfinders: Photographers Frame Nature explores artists’ varied responses to the relationship between nature and humans. These lens-based works reveal the divergent ways in which nature continues to fuel documentation of the human experience and imagination—from images symbolizing the untamed power of nature to those in which the landscape has been shaped and exploited by humans. It traces the lure of photography through five themes culminating in contemporary times when every person with a smartphone has the power to “frame nature.” \nViewfinders is guest curated by Susan Van Scoy\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor of Art History at St. Joseph’s University\, Long Island.

SUMMARY:Hofstra University Museum of Art Presents Off the Press
DESCRIPTION:A print\, in the broadest definition\, is a work of art comprised of ink on paper created through an indirect transfer process. Four major printmaking methods have been developed over the centuries: relief\, intaglio\, and the planographic techniques of lithography and screenprinting. Each printmaking method produces a work on paper that has an individual and identifiable quality. \nOff the Press features works from the Hofstra University Museum of Art collection and provides examples of these four printmaking techniques. The collection contains more than 2\,200 prints in a range of mediums and processes that date from the late 16th century to the 21st century. As printmaking techniques have developed over the centuries\, artists have explored the possibilities and pushed the boundaries of traditional printmaking. Digital technology has added additional pathways for this artistic exploration. \nFunding has been provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. \nAdmission is free.

SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents Hot Tuna "Acoustic & Electric"
DESCRIPTION:Hot Tuna\, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady\, perform with a well-honed and solid power – always in the groove from their years of experience and mutual inspiration. Started as a side project during Jefferson Airplane days\, the constant\, the very definition of Hot Tuna\, has always been Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady. The two boyhood pals have never wavered in one of the most enduring friendships in Rock history. \nFrom their days playing together as teenagers in the Washington\, DC area\, through years of inventive Psylodelic rock in San Francisco (1996 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees)\, to their current acoustic and electric blues sound\, no one has more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady\, the founders and continuing core members of Hot Tuna. At the 2016 Grammys\, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards. \n“Jorma Kaukonen is a force in American music\, equally adept at fingerpicked acoustic folk and blues as he is at wailing on an electric.” – Acoustic Guitar Guitarist and vocalist\, Jorma Kaukonen is a highly respected interpreter of roots music\, blues\, Americana\, and popular rock-and-roll. Jorma’s repertoire goes far beyond psychedelic rock; he is a music legend and one of the finest singer-songwriters in music. Jorma tours the world bringing his unique styling to old blues while writing new songs of weight and dimension. \n“Jack Casady is virtually unparalleled–and yet he has one of the most truly unique electric-bass voices in rock…he can melt into a supportive role but when opportunity knocks\, he bursts forth with creative lines–both simple and ornate–that are unlike any you’ve heard” – Premier Guitar One of the most unique innovators in the sixty-year history of the bass guitar\, Jack Casady made his sweeping melodic mark helping to create the “San Francisco Sound” with legendary rock group Jefferson Airplane. Jack went on to track with Jimi Hendrix\, Crosby\, Stills\, Nash & Young\, Warren Zevon\, members of the Grateful Dead\, John Lee Hooker\, and Gov’t Mule. Casady\, regarded as one of rock’s greatest bassists\, is certainly one of its most original. \n“Hot Tuna is a Psychedelic-Blues Institution” – Rolling Stone Magazine

SUMMARY:Hofstra University Museum of Art Presents New York\, New York: Photographs from the Collection
DESCRIPTION:New York\, New York. The Big Apple. The City that Never Sleeps. Gotham. The Naked City…Iconic names to describe an iconic metropolis\, a city of myth and legend\, where dreams rise as high as skyscrapers and can fall just as far. Yet beyond the silhouetted skyline is a place where New Yorkers actually live\, work\, love\, struggle\, and survive. \nThese photographs from the Hofstra University Museum of Art collection capture New York City in its infinite complexity and variety\, not only celebrating the city’s iconic architecture\, but reveling in its everyday streets and signage\, authentic faces\, and dynamic street scenes. The black-and-white images were made over a span of 75 years\, from 1932 to 2008\, yet are unified through the use of monochrome\, creating connections between disparate decades. While the photographers are not all native New Yorkers\, they are inheritors of this miraculous city\, dedicated to seeking its intricacies\, grandeur\, joy\, and hardships. Their distinct visions unfold in New York’s ever-changing landscape\, chronicling a city that reinvents itself on a daily basis. \nFunding has been provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. \nAdmission is free.
