SUMMARY:Botanical Illustration: Flowering Bulbs with Monica Ray
DESCRIPTION:Most flowering bulbs are planted in fall for spring color or can be forced to flower earlier. The bulbs themselves can be admired for their form\, texture\, color\, tangled mass of roots\, and possible emerging leaf shoots. In this workshop we will focus on rendering a bulb of your choice in colored pencil. Practice color matching and layering techniques to build\, and burnish color. Learn how best to imply the papery skin of the bulb and systematically capture the tangle of roots. Please bring a bulb of your preference to class. \nGood candidates for illustration are Hippeastrum bulbs (a.k.a amaryllis)\, paperwhites and other daffodils\, hyacinths\, and tulips. \nNote: when storing bulbs in your refrigerator make sure no fresh fruit is stored inside. A cold basement is a good place for storage\, however protect your bulbs from freezing and possible little four-footed creatures.

SUMMARY:1 Day Workshop\, Botanical Illustration: Capturing Bark with Monica Ray
DESCRIPTION:Capturing bark \nAfter trees lose their leaves\, a way to identify a tree in winter is a closer look at the texture\, pattern\, and color of its bark all of which are specific to particular trees. In this workshop we will complete a small study of a piece of bark in graphite\, colored pencil\, or a combination of the two. The color of bark is mostly a variation of some kind of brown. Perhaps not at first sight\, but browns can be complex. We will aim to replicate the correct hue and ways to deepen it. Students may work from photographs provided by the instructor\, their own images\, or may bring a piece of bark to class. \nPieces of bark can be found on the ground in a woodland\, on fallen trees\, or among firewood. \nFor materials please refer to the materials list.

SUMMARY:Dance Visions NY presents “From a Distant Past”
DESCRIPTION:From a Distant Past is a reworking of a theatrical dance piece\, based on an original lyrical and symbolic poem by Kyra Jucovy. Depicting a journey\, following a river from its source in caves all the way to the mouth of the ocean\, the poem symbolizes eternal cycles. This intimate performance piece consists of recorded text from the poem\, spoken by an actor over background music\, dance\,and projected imagery.\nThe work has rich and varied dynamics and includes beautiful and eerie depictions of nature through words\, movement\, costumes and imagery It encompasses timeless and timely themes of destruction leading to creation\, darkness to light\, endings to beginnings. Included is Isadora Duncan repertory in Grecian tunics\, adding to the mythic overtones. With discussion of the poem and the performance work with the creators and the performers afterwards
