SUMMARY:The Art Guild of Port Washington presents Alla Prima Portrait Workshop with Costa Vavagiakis
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: Alla Prima Portrait in a Day \nJoin us for an immersive workshop where you’ll learn to create a compelling Alla Prima Portrait in just one day. Under the expert guidance of Costa\, you’ll observe a live model to understand how light interacts with the structures and forms of the head. Costa will walk you through the essentials of portrait painting\, starting with the fundamentals. “I believe the key to successful portraiture is mastering the art of observation.” Developing strong drawing skills is one of the most essential components for creating a realistic portrait. Discover the most efficient methods for beginning a portrait\, focusing on acute observation of warm and cool tones and the perception of subtle hue value changes to create the illusion of form. This workshop provides a comprehensive and informative learning experience that enhances both technical skills and artistic appreciation. Elevate your portrait skills with this unique opportunity! \nMorning Session: Costa will demonstrate how to set up and maintain an orderly palette to avoid mental clutter. He will delve into the principles of color theory and complementary colors\, showing how to apply them in practice. Beginning with the proportions of the head\, Costa will introduce methods for measuring and seeing proportions and alignments in the initial phase of “laying in” the portrait. Emphasizing the importance of starting with basic tones\, shapes\, and planes before delving into smaller forms\, Costa will teach a simplified form of measuring to help you avoid costly mistakes later in the process. \nAfternoon Session: The focus will shift to the application of rendering and blending techniques\, including wet-in-wet\, dry brush\, and knife painting\, and how to use all these techniques simultaneously. Participants will also explore advanced painting concepts such as the use of hard and soft edges\, achieving striking contrasts between lights and shadows to accentuate form\, and using brush strokes to create structure and interest. Finally\, you’ll put it all together with further development and finishing touches. \nThis workshop is for artists of all levels\, though previous painting experience will be helpful. Acrylic painters are also welcome to enroll (bring a slow-dry medium to extend your work time).

SUMMARY:Folk Music Society of Huntington & Cinema Arts Centre present Hard Luck Cafe: Scott Cook in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Scott Cook\, an award-winning Canadian prairie roots balladeer\, will be the featured artist during the monthly Hard Luck Café concert series co-presented by the Folk Music Society of Huntington and the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue\, Huntington) in the Cinema’s Sky Room Cafe on Wednesday\, October 16\, from 7-10 p.m. The internationally touring\, Edmonton\, Alberta-based troubadour will be joined by Pamela Mae on upright bass and backing vocals. An open mic\, for which sign-up starts at 6:30 p.m.\, precedes the concert. Tickets are $25 ($20 for Cinema Arts Centre/FMSH members) and can be purchased online at cinemaartscentre.org or at the box office through the evening of the event. \nA straight-talking\, keenly observant singer-songwriter\, Cook delves in folk\, roots\, blues\, soul and country\, and accompanies himself on fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo. Prior to the pandemic\, he had been playing an average of more than 150 shows and a dozen festivals annually since 2007. Since January 2022\, he’s been back on the road full-time\, living in a campervan named Roadetta with his sweetheart Pamela Mae. They have visited 43 sates and eight Canadian provinces\, in addition to broadcasting solar-powered livestreams from the back of the van. Among his many accolades\, Cook was chosen by attendees at the 2019 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival as the artist “Most Wanted to Return” following his performance in that year’s Falcon Ridge/Grassy Hill Emerging Artist Showcase. More information on Cook\, along with a few videos\, may be found online at scottcook.net.
