SUMMARY:The Paramount Comedy Series Presents: Jim Breuer "The Freedom of Laughter Tour"
DESCRIPTION:Not long after Jim Breuer did his first official standup gig in Clearwater\, Florida\, in 1989\, industry folks began asking him\, “What’s your point of view?” “I don’t know…” He searched for a meaningful response to a ridiculous question. “To make people laugh?” \nThe freewheeling\, New York bred comic storyteller – who made the list of Comedy Central’s “100 Greatest Standups of All Time” – is hotter than ever\, a global touring sensation and regular presence on radio and television whose rabid audience\, he’s thrilled to note\, is filled with “lifetimers.” Once folks see him live\, they’re hooked. Breuer estimates that 78% of his fans have seen him “five\, six\, seven” times. It’s becoming a family thing\, with parents even bringing young teens to see the family man and father of three daughters\, all providing genius “dad” material for his sets. Having evolved both personally and professionally since the beginning. \nBreuer’s pleased to say he’s been F-word free for ten years and counting. Breuer came to national attention during his seasons on Saturday Night Live (1995-98)\, a rebuilding era whose cast featured Will Ferrell\, David Spade and Norm Macdonald. But don’t call him “Goat Boy” (one of his characters on SNL) or ask him to do his Joe Pesci impression. Those things are eons ago. Some even still associate him with “Half Baked\,” a stoner comedy flick from around that time that starred Dave Chappelle and featured cameos by Willie Nelson\, Snoop Dogg and Tommy Chong. \nThe fans who got into Breuer in the new millennium were drawn into his whirlwind journey through his Comedy Central specials such as “Hardcore” (2002) and “Let’s Clear The Air” (2009)\, one of the highest rated comedy specials in the network’s history – popularly known as his “coming out party” as a dad\, cleaning up his act and focusing on the fun and foibles of family life. His next special “And Laughter For All” (2013)\, became the highest rated original comedy special on EPIX to date\, earning it’s spot as a family favorite for it’s relatable and multi- generational humor. His latest special “Comic Frenzy” (2015) is currently available on Amazon Prime. \nMany of Breuer’s newer fans know him from the multitude of hilarious hours he’s spent as a guest on Sirius XM’s “The Howard Stern Show.” Howard’s hosted some of pop culture’s biggest comedy icons over the past 30 years\, yet Breuer gets people telling him he’s their favorite guest ever. “Howard’s audiences know comedy\,” he says. “If they come and I’m not funny\, they’re not coming back.” That’s never happened and never going to. \nBreuer was also the host of “Fridays with Jim Breuer” Sirius XM\, originally known as “Breuer Unleashed.” He currently hosts a podcast called “The Jim Breuer Podcast\,” which is available on iTunes and JimBreuer.com. Over the years\, Breuer has been something of a multi-media sensation currently appearing alongside Kevin James on “Kevin Can Wait” on CBS as well as popular films “Zookeeper\,” “Dick\,” “Titan A.E.” and “Beer League”; hosting MTV’s popular “Beach House” and VH1’s “Web Junk 20”; and being featured on “Comedy Jam\,” “This Is Not Happening\,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien\,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart\,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson\,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live\,” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon\,” and “The Marriage Ref.” \nSince 2015\, he’s shared his dual passions for comedy and baseball (particularly his New York Mets) with thousands via his video recaps of games that he posts on Facebook. Their viral impact has been massive\, with clips airing on the MLB Network and ESPN Sportscenter among others\, and even inspiring Mets fans in other cities to hang with Breuer to root their team on. A die-hard metalhead\, Breuer made his musical debut\, Songs From The Garage in 2016. Produced by Rob Caggiano (Anthrax\, Volbeat) the album features tracks such as “Raising Teenage Girls\,” the throwback anthem “Old School” and “Mr. Rock n’ Roll” with the one and only Brian Johnson of AC/DC. \nAll Breuer aficionados know that family is everything to him\, and his mission is to share the highs and lows\, find the humor in the day to day\, laughing with the triumphs and tragedies and using comedy as a tool to conquer fear – as he did when posting videos of his wife going through cancer treatments the past few years. In 2008\, \nBreuer set out for his “Breuniversity Tour” with his 85-year-old father and a film crew. The footage that was captured blended together to create “The Jim Breuer Road Journals\,” which showcased what life is like on the road with a comedian and his father. Videos from that tour also sparked the making of his documentary “More Than Me\,” which was shown at the 2009 Montreal Film Festival. In line with his love of family. “Comic Frenzy” focused on what Breuer’s life (and all our lives) truly consist of: dealing with the elderly\, becoming our parents’ caretakers and what it takes to be a “marriage warrior.” \n“I’m a deep-rooted family guy with hardcore blue-collar roots\,” he says. “My father was a World War II vet and my mom lost her first husband to WWII. As a child growing up in Valley Stream\, New York\, I lived in low income housing\, then an attic apartment\, to eventually moving down the street into a home of our own\, always surrounded by faith and love. My career reached a new level when I started to raise a family of my own and realized I should stick to what I know\, what everyone could relate to no matter their socio-economic status. My oldest daughter just went to college and we’ve dealt these past few years with mortality issues\, and I’m just there to find the funny in that. It all started with ‘Let’s Clear the Air\,’ which focused on me being a new father who came from another world and who wasn’t prepared for the responsibilities at all.” \nThe crazy state of the world today makes Breuer’s upcoming 2018 tour Jim Breuer Live all the more essential\, as we seek perspective and comic relief from the day to day insanity that drives our 24.7 news cycle and social media. Breuer’s set will be decidedly non-political\, but he will have much to impart about the foolishness of ruining our lives over media-generated frenzies that we have no control over. “My huge focus is\, listen\, stop getting caught up in the hoopla the news\, politics and all that jazz\,” he says. “If every day you wake up and you’re watching five to six hours of it\, it starts to darken your soul. If you spent even ten percent of that time on your wife\, husband\, child or someone else you love\, your personal life would get better and you could help so many people. I’m here to say that life isn’t that horrendous. Can you still eat? Can you still watch your 60” plasma TV? Call me when you have to eat a squirrel for breakfast\, okay? Do something you can control that’s good\, because you can’t fight hate with more hate. Let’s concentrate on the most important things in life.” \n“My job as a comic is to talk about the many great loves of my life\, recognizing that yes\, we are all on borrowed time but we can still enjoy life with a passion and not get caught up in all the madness\,” Breuer adds. “There are always things that can become an obstacle to our happiness\, and the big three for me that I smack into most are divisions in the family\, financial struggles and health issues. For me\, there’s no better feeling in the world than making someone laugh and knowing that I’ve inspired or healed someone. It’s nice when people tell me I’m funny\, but the ones that keep me going are the ones who come up to me and say\, ‘Can I just tell you\, I just lost my mom\, and you healed me. That’s the first time I’ve laughed in ages.’ Or ‘My wife and I were fighting\, we just experienced death. We knew seeing you was going to help. Thank you. We needed this so much.’ We’re not here for very long\, and we’re all stuck here together. Everybody needs to laugh and be uplifted. We’re here to take care of others. I’m on a mission to lift you in the only way I know how.”

SUMMARY:Hofstra University Museum of Art Presents New York\, New York: Photographs from the Collection
DESCRIPTION:New York\, New York. The Big Apple. The City that Never Sleeps. Gotham. The Naked City…Iconic names to describe an iconic metropolis\, a city of myth and legend\, where dreams rise as high as skyscrapers and can fall just as far. Yet beyond the silhouetted skyline is a place where New Yorkers actually live\, work\, love\, struggle\, and survive. \nThese photographs from the Hofstra University Museum of Art collection capture New York City in its infinite complexity and variety\, not only celebrating the city’s iconic architecture\, but reveling in its everyday streets and signage\, authentic faces\, and dynamic street scenes. The black-and-white images were made over a span of 75 years\, from 1932 to 2008\, yet are unified through the use of monochrome\, creating connections between disparate decades. While the photographers are not all native New Yorkers\, they are inheritors of this miraculous city\, dedicated to seeking its intricacies\, grandeur\, joy\, and hardships. Their distinct visions unfold in New York’s ever-changing landscape\, chronicling a city that reinvents itself on a daily basis. \nFunding has been provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. \nAdmission is free.

SUMMARY:EastLine Theatre’s Production of “Anna in the Tropics” at Westbury Arts
DESCRIPTION:Winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize\, set in Ybor City\, Florida\, in 1929. Here\, a cadre of Cuban-Americans\, primarily female cigar factory laborers who hand roll each cigar await the arrival of their new lector\, Juan Julian. The lector serves to entertain the workers by reading great stories. Most of the group is overjoyed by the presence of this new\, handsome lector\, but when he starts reading from the Russian classic\, Anna Karenina\, the scandalous lives of Tolstoy’s characters start to intertwine with the lives of his listeners. As Juan Julian reads\, the hot\, humid Florida summer strangely starts to resemble the cold Russian winter of Tolstoy. Infidelity\, money problems\, and violence spring to the surface as the owners and workers grapple with their newfound understanding of life\, love and business.

SUMMARY:EastLine Theatre presents Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz
DESCRIPTION:Nilo Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize winner comes to Westbury in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Free tickets with a refundable reservation. \n‘I have dreams and they are full of white snow\,\nand Anna Karenina is dancing waltzes with Vronsky.\nThen I see them in a little room\,\nand all the snow melts from the heat of their bodies.’ \nTampa\, Florida\, 1929. In a Cuban–American cigar factory\, where cigars are still rolled by hand and “lectors” are employed to educate and entertain the workers\, the arrival of a new lector is cause for celebration. But when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina\, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners\, for whom Tolstoy\, the tropics\, and the American dream prove a volatile combination. \nEastLine Theatre in association with Westbury Arts will present Nilo Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Anna in the Tropics this September\, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. \nThis production is part of EastLine’s Theatre for All initiative.

SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents The Struts "Across The Pond Tour"
DESCRIPTION:The third full-length from British rock band The Struts\, Strange Days came to life over the course of a charmed and frenzied burst of creativity last spring. After getting tested for COVID-19\, singer Luke Spiller\, guitarist Adam Slack\, bassist Jed Elliott\, and drummer Gethin Davies all moved into the Los Angeles home of Jon Levine\, a producer who worked extensively on their acclaimed sophomore effort YOUNG & DANGEROUS (including the album’s chart-climbing lead single “Body Talks”). Within just ten days of couch-crashing at Levine’s house\, The Struts had laid down nine original tracks and one masterful cover of a KISS B-side: a lean\, mean body of work that amounts to their most glorious output to date. \n“It was so much fun to make a record this way instead of getting everything done in between touring\, working with multiple producers in multiple countries\,” says Spiller. “We were all just burning to capture that excitement as much as we possibly could\, and at times it felt like the songs were literally just falling from the sky.” \nIn an organic turn of events for a band massively embraced by some of rock-and-roll history’s greatest icons—a feat that’s included opening for The Rolling Stones\, The Who\, and Guns N’ Roses—Strange Days finds The Struts joining forces with a formidable lineup of guest musicians: Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and Phil Collen\, Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes\, Tom Morello\, and Robbie Williams. Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Panic! At the Disco\, Arctic Monkeys\, Johnny Marr)\, the result is a powerhouse album that lifts The Struts’ glammed-up breed of modern rock to entirely new and wildly thrilling heights. \nKicking off with a magnificent bang\, Strange Days opens on its title track\, a sprawling and string-laced duet with Robbie Williams. “I was doing Quarantine Radio and Robbie hit me up out of the blue asking if we could talk\,” notes Spiller\, referring to the Instagram Live show launched by The Struts in the early days of lockdown. “We ended up Face-Timing for about two hours the first time we’d ever spoken\, talking about life and music and UFOs and everything else you can think of. I asked if he’d like to work together at some point\, and while we were making the album he graciously let us come over and record him singing on his front porch.” Despite its prescient title\, “Strange Days” took shape from a voice memo Spiller recorded on the band’s tour bus way back in summer 2019. Fused with a cabaret-inspired interlude Spiller had recently dreamed up\, the song ultimately evolved into the perfect vessel for the frontman’s force-of-nature voice: a tenderhearted epic that offers incredible solace in the most chaotic of times. \nSparked from a Britpop-leaning riff brought in by Slack\, the album’s potent lead single “Another Hit of Showmanship” feat. Albert Hammond Jr. centers on another poignant vocal performance from Spiller\, who deftly channels the tension between giving in to temptation and rising above your demons. After laying down the initial version of the track\, Spiller reached out to Hammond\, for whom the band opened on a series of 2018 solo shows. “‘Another Hit of Showmanship’ reminds me of being at a club night called Ramshackle years ago at the O2 Academy in Bristol\, where they’d play bands like The Libertines and Razorlight and Scissor Sisters\, and of course The Strokes\,” says Spiller. “I hit up Albert out of the blue and told him\, ‘We’ve got this song\, and I’m so excited to see what you would do with it.’ As soon as he got his hands on it\, he took it to a whole different level—it really just shows why he’s so brilliant at what he does.” \nThe most groovy-heavy work yet from The Struts\, Strange Days also delivers hip-shaking standouts like “I Hate How Much I Want You”: a hot-and-bothered stomper graced with a scorching guitar solo from Phil Collen and Joe Elliott’s high-voltage vocals. Another explosive moment\, “All Dressed Up (With Nowhere To Go)” unfolds in snarling power chords and exquisitely cheeky lyrics (its opening salvo: “You look like a movie star/On Sunday morning”). “That one’s based around the idea of being in love with your motorcycle—there’s a bit of innuendo to it\,” says Spiller\, whose own bike inspired the track. “The whole concept of being all dressed up with nowhere to go seems especially relevant the moment.” Meanwhile\, “Wild Child” makes for a fierce and filthy anthem\, infinitely supercharged by Tom Morello’s blistering guitar work. And on the beautifully weary “Burn It Down\,” The Struts slip into a bittersweet mood\, serving up a slow-burning ballad that sounds straight from the sessions for Exile on Main St. \nThe sole cover song on Strange Days\, “Do You Love Me” finds The Struts updating a fantastically sleazy track first recorded by KISS in 1976 and remade in 1980 by Girl (a late-’70s/early-’80s British glam-metal band that\, incidentally\, featured Phil Collen on guitar). “I was so in love with Girl’s version of ‘Do You Love Me’ and thought the simplicity of it was amazing\,” says Spiller. “I wanted to give it an even bigger sound for our album—something way more aggressive\, completely balls-to-the-wall.” \nIn their supreme handling of “Do You Love Me\,” The Struts again claim their rightful place in the lineage of rock-and-roll hellraisers. Formed in Derby\, England\, in 2012\, the band quickly drew a major following with their outrageous live show\, and later made their debut with Have You Heard (a 2015 EP whose lead single “Could Have Been Me” hit #1 on Spotify’s viral chart). Before they’d even put out their first album\, the band opened for The Rolling Stones before a crowd of 80\,000 in Paris and toured the U.S. on a string of sold-out shows. With their full-length debut Everybody Wants arriving in 2016\, The Struts released YOUNG & DANGEROUS in 2018\, soon after wrapping up a North American tour with Foo Fighters. Having toured incessantly since their formation\, The Struts have also taken the stage at many the world’s biggest music festivals\, including Lollapalooza\, Governors Ball\, Isle of Wight\, and many more. \nAs Spiller reveals\, the making of Strange Days was a period of joyful productivity. “Every day I’d wake up at about 7 a.m.\, get three venti Americanos delivered to the house\, go out to the backyard and smoke a couple of spliffs\, and listen to the voice memos I’d recorded at the sessions the day before\,” he recalls. “After the first four days or so we hit a bit of a wall\, so we decided to get some beers in and just stay in the pool all day—and the day after that we knocked out three whole songs.” Throughout Strange Days\, that kinetic energy manifests in the album’s unbridled spirit\, an element that makes every track exhilarating. “I think because we’d wanted to make an album this way for years\, all that excitement and hunger led to an immediate sort of magic once we started working on it\,” says Spiller. “It was undoubtedly a magical ten days for us—and I hope when people hear the album\, it gives them a taste of that magic too.”
