SUMMARY:Long Island Philharmonia presents Migrations: A concert of New Contemporary Music by Women and Minority Composers
DESCRIPTION:Three world premiere pieces by Jazzie Jasmine Piggott\, Nataliya Medvevovskaya\, and Doug Hoppe. This is our first large orchestral project since Covid and we’re pulling out all the stops! Jazzie will open the program with a five movement work for narrator and wind ensemble with string bass. The piece explores the slave trade\, jim crow\, and the modern day african and afro-carribean diasporas. Next will come Nataliyas’s large one movement work for full orchestra inspired by leaving Putin’s Russia and emigrating to the USA\, and her life in NY as a Russian Jewish emigre’. Doug is putting the finishing touches on his first symphony\, in which he explores ideas that fascinate him musically while catering to the traditional symphonic forms; his program starts in a mythical country with problems\, continues on the journey through central america and Mexico at the US southern border\, describing in detail musical references to the myriad problems we all (all stakeholders) face from both legal and illegal migration. The finale is optimistic with an appreciation for a new life in America. We originally had proposed writing chamber symphonies but due to immense interest of performers we have increased the size of the ensemble. Three composers from diverse backgrounds — African (Jasmine Pigott) – Latino (Doug Hoppe) – and Ashkenazi Jewish (Nataliya Medvevovskaya) — explore the subject of global Migration and the human condition through exciting and artistic new works for symphony orchestras. Doug will conduct the Long Island Philharmonia and Nataliya and Jasmine will perform and narrate as well. Tickets $20 / Children $0

DESCRIPTION:PAMELA WALDROUP & ROBERT MIELENHAUSEN present “INTERSECTIONS – URBAN PERSPECTIVES\,” a 2-person exhibition of 30 paired photographs and paintings at Alfred Van Loen Galley from November 9\, 2024 – January 11\, 2025. \n• ARTISTS’ RECEPTION: Saturday\, November 9th from 2-4pm. \n• EVENT DETAILS from the South Huntington Public Library:\n• Photographer Pamela Waldroup and painter Robert Mielenhausen have collaborated for this exhibition to show the combination of two visions of New York City. Pamela Waldroup frames her work through the lens of a camera with black-and-white photography that captures the architecture and lively shapes within the scope of NYC. Robert Mielenhausen depicts his work through a painter’s brush using texture\, color\, and lighting to show off the vibes of NYC neighborhoods in a representational way. Their exhibition\, Intersections – Urban Perspectives\, invites viewers to engage with the city’s atmosphere and fill the void between the artists’ unique visual interpretations. \nSouth Huntington Public Library\n145 Pidgeon Hill Road\nHuntington Station\, NY 11746\n(631) 549-4411
