SUMMARY:The Heckscher Museum of Art presents Emma Stebbins: Carving Out History
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is the first to recognize Emma Stebbins (1815–1882) as one of the most significant American sculptors of the nineteenth century. While her Bethesda Fountain in Central Park has been a global icon for 150 years\, the full scope of Stebbins’s life and work is virtually unknown. From 1857 to 1870\, she created innovative sculptures while living in Rome with her wife\, renowned Shakespearean actress Charlotte Cushman\, who championed her career. Stebbins modeled inventive and incisive interpretations of literary and biblical subjects\, unprecedented allegories of American industry\, and notable portraits of her friends and family. In 1863\, with the order for the Bethesda Fountain\, she became the first woman to earn a commission for a public sculpture from the city of New York. When Bostonians installed her statue of educator Horace Mann on the grounds of the Massachusetts State House in 1865\, she became the first woman in the country to complete an outdoor bronze monument. \nEmma Stebbins: Carving Out History brings together most of the artist’s rare extant work\, including a portrait drawing and several sculptures that will be on public view for the first time in a century. In addition to fourteen sculptures\, the exhibition features archival material including photographs that document lost marble sculptures and plaster studies that Stebbins never realized in stone or bronze. Stebbins completed the Bethesda Fountain to celebrate the Croton Aqueduct\, which brought clean drinking water to New York City. The inclusion of paintings and photographs by historic and contemporary artists including William Merritt Chase\, Martha Edelheit\, and Ricky Flores attest to its enduring relevance as a monument to health\, healing\, and peace. \nThe exhibition is curated by Karli Wurzelbacher\, PhD\, Chief Curator of The Heckscher Museum of Art\, which stewards the largest collection of Stebbins’s work. An extensive scholarly publication with a foreword by Pulitzer- and Tony-award winning playwright Tony Kushner accompanies the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Heckscher Museum of Art presents Central Park's Bethesda Fountain Visits Heckscher Park Through Immersive AR Experience
DESCRIPTION:The Heckscher Museum of Art\, in partnership with the Central Park Conservancy—the nonprofit organization that manages Central Park—brings Emma Stebbins’ iconic Bethesda Fountain to life in Heckscher Park\, Huntington\, through an Augmented Reality (AR) experience. Visitors will be able to use their smartphones to experience the full monument in this new setting. The immersive experience will allow visitors to look thoughtfully at Stebbins’s magnificent work as they take a 360-degree virtual walk around the entire monument. This one-of-a kind event coincides with the seminal exhibition\, Emma Stebbins: Carving Out History.\nThe exhibition devotes a gallery to exploring the central role the Bethesda Fountain has played serving as a convening space\, cultural hub\, cinematic icon\, beacon for tourists\, and inspiration to other artists\, like Tony Kushner\, who placed the Bethesda Fountain at the center of his Pulitzer Prize winning play Angels in America\, and who wrote a foreword for the exhibition catalogue. After visiting the exhibition\, visitors will be able to experience the spectacular monument just a few feet outside the Museum doors.\nFor the best AR viewing\, visitors can use the QR codes easily accessible on Museum signage in areas in front of the Museum in Heckscher Park. Look for the Emma Stebbins AR in Apple or Google App Stores.

SUMMARY:Artist Member Sydell Glasser presents Views of the World: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Views of the World is solo show of recent mixed media prints and paintings that have been completed by Sydell Glasser over the last eighteen months. The work will be on display at the Harborfields Public Library from March 3-29th\, with an opening reception at the library on Saturday\, March 7th from 1-3pm. The images in this exhibition mark a pivotal shift in Sydell Glasser’s approach to landscape. Her recent body of monotypes and paintings are constructed by adding textiles\, found materials\, and collage pieces from rejected prints into the final images. By blending natural references with emotional and tactile abstraction\, Sydell’s work invites audiences to experience diverse environments not just as places\, but as vessels for memory\, identity\, and wonder. \n“Feeling a sense of awe and humility against the forces of nature has repeatedly given me a grounding sense of perspective\, inspiration for my work\, and is something I strive to share with my audience. The notion that nothing is permanent\, that even the earth is moving beneath our feet\, has allowed me to gain perspective while the world around me is rapidly changing. This recent body of work has become a personal narrative about the times of triumph and difficult times in my life. Through monotype and material experimentation\, I seek to create prints that invite curiosity\, contemplation\, and a renewed way of seeing\, offering moments of beauty and grounding.”

DESCRIPTION:The Arkell Museum presents a solo exhibition by artist Fernando Carpaneda\, featuring portraits of ordinary people in New York\, portraits of friends\, and a series of paintings depicting scenes from Jones Beach\, New York. The works are executed in acrylic paint and reflect Carpaneda’s expressive and personal approach to portraiture. \nCarpaneda received the Best of Exhibition award at the Arkell Museum’s 2025 Art of New York: Annual Art Exhibition with Jury for his painting The Son of Man. As part of this honor\, the museum invited the artist to present a solo exhibition in Canajoharie\, New York. \nFernando Carpaneda is a contemporary artist known for his contributions to punk and homoerotic art. Since the 1980s\, he has developed a bold visual language through sculpture and painting\, exploring LGBTQIA+ narratives\, punk identities\, and bodies often excluded from the mainstream art canon. \nHis work has been exhibited internationally\, including at Sotheby’s in New York\, the Heckscher Museum of Art\, the Long Island Museum\, the Kenosha Public Museum\, the Tom of Finland Foundation\, the CBGB Art Gallery\, and the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art. His market presence and institutional recognition continue to grow\, highlighted by the sale of his work at Sotheby’s and the acquisition of his painting Pride for the Permanent Collection of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil. \nThe Spring Opening Reception will take place on March 14 at 2 PM. Guests are invited to enjoy a glass of prosecco\, appetizers\, new exhibitions\, and the opportunity to meet the artists of the Regional Art Galleries. Admission is free and all are welcome. \nThe exhibition will be on view March 6 – April 24 at the Arkell Museum Regional Art Galleries in Canajoharie\, New York. \nFor more information\, call 518-673-2314 ext. 106 or email info@arkellmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Jan Guarino presents Fearless Watercolors Workshop on Amelia Island
DESCRIPTION:This program is a culmination of ideas I have discovered\, techniques I’ve adapted from classes and workshops I have taken ~ it is my desire to interpret a subject matter to render it unique\, fresh and worthy of being a painting. This medium is unique in the fact that it moves on its own which causes many artists to freeze up and begin to try to control the paint. This workshop shows you techniques that will allow you to feel free while holding onto detail\, gain control\, make corrections and have fun. Learn to trust your instincts with color and add contrast and allow blossoms\, drips and splatters to work for you. You will also learn what makes a good photo to paint from to get the very best painting possible. I offer solutions and tools to try these techniques to integrate into your own artwork. Whether a beginner\, someone who has painted in watercolors or more experienced\, everyone can gain knowledge and techniques from this workshop.
