SUMMARY:The Heckscher Museum of Art presents Robert Graham Carter: The Art of Reflection
DESCRIPTION:Robert Graham Carter (American\, b. 1938) is a visual artist best known for his mixed-media works including commanding drawings; sculptural\, high-relief paintings; and whimsical works on wood. Carter’s figurative compositions routinely speak to systemic societal issues with a specificity derived from his lived experiences. Created over the last sixty years drawing influence from his upbringing in the Jim Crow South\, Robert’s figurative compositions balance personal and universal truths\, with a focus on topics pertinent to the African-American condition: the joy and importance of family\, the legacy of segregation\, the charm of childhood\, the spiritual and corporal force that is the Black church\, and the impression of Blackface on American culture. This 2025 presentation explores his studio practice and his unique painterly voice as it traces overarching impactful themes from his lifelong career. \nConceived in direct collaboration with the artist\, this exhibition is curated by Sarah Battle\, associate projects manager of academic programs and publications\, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts\, National Gallery of Art\, with support from Camille Pratt\, artist\, and digitization specialist\, Digital Transitions-Pixel Acuity.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the modern ink-painting and its combination with watercolors and acrylics. Participants will study the meaning behind skills\, styles\, cultural traditions\, and new technical contexts through the teacher’s demonstrations\, students’ class practices\, artwork presentations and critiques. In these two-day sessions\, the instructor will introduce important key features in modern Oriental brushworks and mixed-media paintings\, which consists of experimenting lines\, ink washes\, textures and special techniques to describe the shapes and characteristics of modern landscape paintings realistically and abstractly. Classes often begin with a demonstration followed by time for individual practice and attention\, allowing students to learn at their own pace. Through hands-on practice and fearless experimentation\, this workshop aims to cultivate practical skills while instilling a sense of passion and vitality in every brushstroke. DESCRIPTION:Usdan welcomes prospective summer camp families to visit our 140-acre wooded campus to further explore our art programs for kids grades K-12. \nWhen you arrive for a tour\, you’ll be paired with a member of the Usdan community\, often a current or former teacher\, staff member\, or Usdan alum\, who can speak directly to your child’s area of study — Theater\, Music\, Visual Art\, Dance\, Creative Writing\, Nature\, or Recreation. \nYour tour guide will answer your questions as they lead you on a guided walk around campus\, taking care to bring you to the studio spaces most applicable to your child’s area of study. \nTours last between 45–60 minutes and are typically private or in small group settings. The tour will traverse paved\, unpaved\, and hilly areas. Please be prepared to complete the tour on foot as no ground transportation will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes. At the end of your tour\, you may meet with one of our Enrollment Specialists who can answer any questions you may have regarding the enrollment process.
