SUMMARY:The Heckscher Museum of Art presents Robert Graham Carter: The Art of Reflection
DESCRIPTION:Robert Graham Carter (American\, b. 1938) is a visual artist best known for his mixed-media works including commanding drawings; sculptural\, high-relief paintings; and whimsical works on wood. Carter’s figurative compositions routinely speak to systemic societal issues with a specificity derived from his lived experiences. Created over the last sixty years drawing influence from his upbringing in the Jim Crow South\, Robert’s figurative compositions balance personal and universal truths\, with a focus on topics pertinent to the African-American condition: the joy and importance of family\, the legacy of segregation\, the charm of childhood\, the spiritual and corporal force that is the Black church\, and the impression of Blackface on American culture. This 2025 presentation explores his studio practice and his unique painterly voice as it traces overarching impactful themes from his lifelong career. \nConceived in direct collaboration with the artist\, this exhibition is curated by Sarah Battle\, associate projects manager of academic programs and publications\, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts\, National Gallery of Art\, with support from Camille Pratt\, artist\, and digitization specialist\, Digital Transitions-Pixel Acuity.

SUMMARY:St John’s Huntington presents Jazz Rising Stars – Next Generation Jazz Showcase
DESCRIPTION:St. John’s Episcopal Church is delighted to offer a stage and spotlight to the next generation of young jazz talent on Sunday\, March 30th\, starting at 5 p.m.\, at the church (located at the intersection of Main Street and Prospect Street\, Huntington Village). As part of St. John’s Jazz Connections Concert Series\, the Jazz Rising Stars – Next Generation Jazz Showcase is designed to connect young musicians to audiences\, event promoters\, as well as networking with other musicians. The Showcase will present short sets of innovative jazz music by trombonist Sam Margolis and saxophonist Gabriel Nekrutman and their respective bands. They will be followed by an invitation only jam session hosted by a professional rhythm section with bassist Keenan Zach\, drummer Dr. Darrell Smith and pianist Alex Pryodny. \nThe Showcase will be presented from 5 to 6 p.m. and will be followed by a jam session from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. FREE tickets are available with registration at https://www.stjohnshuntington.org/concerts \n“Jazz Connections” concert series started at St. John’s Huntington in the Spring of 2024 thanks to a donation from the estate of jazz singer Natalie Rae\, a student of Lennie Tristano who lived in Huntington and was passionate about promoting jazz music. We aim to bring world-class jazz music to Huntington\, promote knowledge and education of jazz as a reflection of the cultural tapestries and complex histories of America and the world and foster community connections based on shared love of music.
