SUMMARY:The Paramount Five for Fighting with Special Guest: The Verve Pipe
DESCRIPTION:The only way for a story to progress is to turn the page. John Ondrasik— the songwriter and performer known as the platinum-selling\, Grammy-nominated\, Five For Fighting—knows this well. In the two decades since his first major single\, “Superman (It’s Not Easy)\,” hit the stratosphere\, the artist has both evolved and come back ‘round full circle. Creativity\, if nothing else\, is paradoxical. \nTo date\, Five For Fighting\, has released six studio LPs\, including the platinum certified America Town and The Battle for Everything; and the top-10 charting Two Lights\, along with an EP and live albums. \nOndrasik has penned major hits\, including the chart-topping “100 Years\,” “The Riddle\,” “Chances\,” “World\,” and “Easy Tonight\,” which have earned tens of millions of streams and place him as a top-10 Hot Adult Contemporary artist for the 2000s. The reflective “100 Years” has joined “Superman (It’s Not Easy) as part of the American Songbook and continues to stand the test of time at weddings\, birthdays\, graduations\, memorials\, and many a home video. Five For Fighting’s music has also been featured in more than 350 films\, television shows\, and commercials\, including the Oscar-winning The Blind Side\, Hawaii Five-O\, The Sopranos and the CBS drama\, Code Black. \nReferencing Fight For Fighting’s success in the 2000s\, AllMusic called Ondrasik “one of the decade’s leading balladeers.” But perhaps his biggest achievement is performing “Superman (It’s Not Easy)\,” at the 2001 Concert for New York\, a benefit show at Madison Square Garden that honored first responders and the fallen about a month after the tragic September 11th attacks. Ondrasik performed alongside other big-name artists like Paul McCartney\, The Who\, Elton John\, Billy Joel\, and dozens more. \nSays Ondrasik\, “It was a surreal experience. I was honored and blessed to pay tribute to the heroes who ran into those buildings at ground zero\, and hopefully\, through a song\, provide a little solace to family members who’d lost loved ones.”\nNow\, though\, what once was a dream is a reality. Buoyed by his unique falsetto voice and his prowess on the piano—a skill bestowed to him by his piano teacher mother—Ondrasik has made a solid reputation for himself in the world of songwriting and performance\, selling upwards of three million albums over his career. Not only does he tour with his popular string quartet and play solo and rock band gigs\, but he is also a high demand keynote speaker in which he combines themes of creativity and innovation with his business acumen. Along with his father\, he has managed the family business throughout his musical career. As Ondrasik happily puts it\, his company\, Precision Wire Products\, “makes the best shopping cart in the world!”\nHe’s presented at TEDx\, The Salk Institute\, American Cancer Society\, and dozens more. Perhaps being the son of an astrophysicist dad and having a degree in mathematics from UCLA has something to do with it. \n“Math was the Plan-B to get a real job when the music thing imploded\,” says Ondrasik\, with a chuckle. \nBut that doesn’t mean he wasn’t always a student at heart. As he wrote songs in his late teens and early 20s\, the Los Angeles-born Ondrasik studied his favorite rock vocalists. Finding out that singers like Freddie Mercury and Steve Perry studied classical voice\, he did too\, even seeking out some of those icons’ former teachers. No stone unturned. \nMost recently\, his song with the biggest sticking power is the powerful\, “Blood on My Hands\,” a protest song that takes a non-political\, moral stance against the 2021 United States chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. \nWhile he’s well-versed in politics\, he isn’t of a bickering mindset. For Ondrasik\, it’s about the conversation. “Blood on My Hands\,” the track\, accompanying acoustic version\, and docu-music video\, “Blood on My Hands (White House Version)\,” has had millions of streams to date (despite little-to-no radio play). Like other protest songs of the past— “Ohio” by Crosby\, Stills\, Nash & Young or “The Times They Are a-Changin’” by Bob Dylan—Ondrasik aimed to point out a problem. While it’s critical of President Biden’s administration\, he says that if a Republican were President\, the song would remain the same\, only the names would change. \nThanks to the song\, Ondrasik is now working with evacuation groups that strive to help the American citizens left behind in Afghanistan by the U.S. government\, as well as the Afghan people who remain there largely under the threat of terrorism. It’s a difficult\, and at times a polarizing subject\, but it’s one Ondrasik is not shying away from. Not because of any politics or partisan pats on the back\, but simply because he knows it’s the right thing to do. \nOndrasik notes\, “There has been a tradition of musicians speaking truth to power. In the current tribal culture\, our freedom of expression has never been more critical.” \nThroughout his multi-decade career\, which began when music publisher Carla Berkowitz (now his wife of 25 years) discerned him in a dive bar\, Ondrasik has been involved in multiple charity efforts. Along with supporting the troops via multiple USO tours\, Ondrasik created “The CD For the Troops” project with song and comedy compilations featuring artists like Billy Joel\, Melissa Ethridge\, Chris Rock\, and others\, gifting more than one million CDs to veterans and military families. John has also been deeply involved with the ALS charity “Augie’s Quest.” \nWhile he may not be as obsessive as he once was—writing upwards of dozens of songs per month\, Ondrasik is more focused today. He knows who he is\, as an artist and as a human being. His is a career molded by light and darkness. At one point\, he’d been looked over by every publishing house and label out there. At another\, he had one of the biggest songs in the world. Those extremes give a person perspective. \n“I’ve been incredibly blessed\,” he says. “I still pinch myself.” \nAs Five For Fighting\, which is a professional hockey term designating a five-minute penalty for fisticuffs on the ice\, Ondrasik has also developed a close relationship within the world of sports. He was a contributing writer for Sports Illustrated as well as for his beloved Los Angeles Kings. Five For Fighting was one of the first musical artists to perform on ESPN’s SportsCenter\, and has played The Daytona 500\, Monday Night Football\, The Heritage Classic\, the L.A. Kings outdoor hockey game\, and more. \n“Singing from home plate at Dodger stadium\,” Ondrasik says\, “where\, as a five-year-old boy\, my dad and I would catch bleacher bombs during batting practice—that was a dream.” \nToday\, Ondrasik spends his time writing music\, touring\, working at the family business\, and enjoying life with his wife\, two children\, and dog Ender. \nThrough “What Kind of World Do You Want\,” Ondrasik’s charity driven website – WhatKindofWorldDoYouWant.com – he is currently raising funds for Afghan evacuation organizations\, refugees and veteran mental wellness charities. The singer also launched his new episodic web docu-series titled “Meet the Heroes\,” which features Ondrasik interviewing heroic Americans who are involved in rescuing and evacuating American citizens\, Afghan allies\, and persons of high risk from Afghanistan. \nWhat motivates him musically now? He wants to promote dialogue. He’s set to speak his mind. In song\, with the piano. \nOndrasik doesn’t shy away from nuance. He embraces it and seeks it – just as he does the next chorus\, the next verse. It’s what artists and freethinkers do\, after all. It’s his gift to share. His decided obligation\, too.

SUMMARY:The Paramount Collective Soul & Switchfoot
DESCRIPTION:COLLECTIVE SOUL: VIP Packages available at Ticketmaster.com – Click Buy Tickets below! \nEd Roland – vocals / guitar\nDean Roland – rhythm guitar\nJesse Triplett – lead guitar / background vocals\nWill Turpin – bass / background vocals\nJohnny Rabb – drums / background vocals \nIt’s probably (well\, definitely) somewhat of an understatement to say Collective Soul frontman and chief songwriter Ed Roland is unwaveringly driven in his desire to double down on doing more of what he does best — making music\, sweet music\, both in the studio and onstage. \n“People ask me if I have a hobby\, but for me\, it’s just music\,” Roland confirms. “I mean\, I don’t know what else to do\, because that’s what I love to do. I live in the studio — but then the time comes when I go\, ‘Well\, now I wanna go play live.’ I just love the creation of music\, and the process of finding out what’s gonna happen with it next. That kinda defines it all for me.” \nIn following his ever-tenacious muse\, Roland is always looking to connect with his current Collective Soul bandmates any which way he can. Actually\, the word current is a bit of a misnomer\, since Roland truly believes the Collective Soul of the here and now is as permanently intertwined as any group of musicians he’s ever worked with over the course of his illustrious career. “It’s worth noting See What You Started by Continuing was really the demo for this band as it stands right now\,” Roland points out\, referring to the 2015 album that realigned the rock quintet’s creative compass. “I mean\, this is the band for the rest of my life. This is it\, man.” \nIndeed\, if a) 2015’s aforementioned See What You Started by Continuing was the reset blueprint for how a revamped and revitalized five-man lineup fully gels as a unit\, and b) 2019’s Blood was the ensuing coagulant further infused by an in-tune rock ensemble clearly firing on all corpuscles\, then c) Collective Soul’s upcoming\, long-awaited 2022 album release Vibrating simply sends the band’s artistic spirit into the next stratosphere. \n“Our fans have already picked up on that\,” agrees Roland\, “because they’ve been waiting for Vibrating for almost three years now — and I can’t wait for them to hear it. They’re excited because both See What You Started and Blood set such a high standard for where we’re going as a band — and it’s only going to continue getting better with Vibrating. I really do believe that.” \nYou can believe it too\, for the proof lies within the new album’s deeply delineated grooves. Fact is\, Vibrating positively pulsates with the boundless energy that has been Collective Soul’s aural calling card for going on three full decades. From the propulsively gnarly kiss-off of “Cut the Cord” to the reflective midtempo jangle of “Take” to the heart-wrenching reality check of “Rule #1” — replete with a soaring string section\, no less! — to the choir-backed emotional crossroads of “Where Do I Go\,” Vibrating contains 42 minutes of irrefutable sonic evidence of a band wholly uninterested in sitting still. “I think we’re on a roll\,” observes Roland. “We’re not afraid to stretch the boundaries — but we do know how to stay in our lane when we need to. Sometimes\, though\, we just have to go faster.” \nThe next logical acceleratory step\, of course\, resides in taking Vibrating out on the road where the band belongs\, and test-driving how this electrifying new material meshes with indelible Collective Soul setlist classics like “Shine\,” “December\,” “The World I Know\,” “Gel\,” “AYTA\,” “Why\, Pt. 2\,” “Precious Declaration\,” and “Heavy” — in addition to more recent\, Blood-spawned tracks like “Right as Rain\,” “Observation of Thoughts\,” and “Over Me.” \n“We’re ready to go\,” declares Roland. “Most of us grew up together and knew each other as kids\, so that helps with the live chemistry. I’ve always said this about this band — we know when to knock each other out\, and we know when to hug each other. We won’t put up with any crap\, but if you’re feeling down and need help\, we’ll pick you up. We’re coming up on 30 years as a band\, so we have to be friends first and foremost to keep it all going. If we aren’t friends like that\, then we’re not going to have longevity in our career in order to continue doing what we love to do. That’s just the bottom line.” \nSeeing eye to eye\, and ear to ear\, is part of the secret sauce of why Collective Soul continues to both record and play together at an uncompromised level of high quality. “That’s the end goal for everybody in this band\,” agrees Roland. “Just because I write the songs doesn’t mean I’m the only one who wants it all to come out right. We all want it to be right — and that’s because this is a band that acts like a band.” \nWorking in tandem\, sharing unbridled opinions\, and listening to what everyone else has to say without recrimination are all key proponents in fostering Collective Soul’s perpetual harmony. “That’s the forte of this band\,” Roland acknowledges. “We discuss things together\, we figure them out together\, and we make sure to get everything right. That’s how we love to do it. And I say this out of confidence\, and not out of ego — we’re really\, really good at it\, too.” \nYou’ll get no arguments here. As 2022 unfurls\, it’s clear heaven continues to shine its light down on Collective Soul\, a formidable five-man band humming along in unison with many more good vibrations of their own to share with the masses far and wide. There’s a reason Collective Soul are made for me and you — so be sure to see and hear them for yourself first-hand\, the next time they make their presence known in your neck of the woods. —Mike Mettler\, official Soulographer \nCollective Soul – Discography \nHints Allegations & Things Left Unsaid (1994) Afterwords (2007)\nCollective Soul (1995) Collective Soul (2009)\nDisciplined Breakdown (1997) See What You Started by Continuing (2015)\nDosage (1999) Live (2017)\nBlender (2000) Blood (2019)\nYouth (2004) Half & Half EP (2020)\nHome (2006) Vibrating (2022) \nSWITCHFOOT: VIP Packages available at Ticketmaster.com – Click Buy Tickets below! \nInterrobang: story behind the album \nhuman be:ings \nwhat does it mean to be be:loved?\nwhat does it mean to be loved or to love someone else? \nis love a feeling? does it mean that you like the way they make you feel inside? or maybe you share similar interests? maybe you like the same band or the same food? or does it mean that you agree with them? \nmaybe there’s more than one kind of love. the first love is built on commonality. this love is less of a choice\, and more of a happy accident. the serendipitous byproduct of similarity and pheromones: two people who complement each other in this glorious symbiotic union. \nbut when the first love is tested\, things tend to fall apart. the honeymoon is over. and the true colors show. you strongly disagree. and you’re hurt. and you’re angry. and your anger is justified. \n“all you need is love! all you need is love!” \nbut of course the beatles break up. and the marriage ends. and the world goes to war. \nentropy brings all things to a lower state of less order\, and the bond that held us together is severed and broken.\nsigh…what a sad\, predictable ending to such a promising start. the first love is over. \nbut what if there was another love. a second\, higher love that is not a result\, but a choice. a love that was more of an action than a feeling. this second love is the kind of love that you cannot fall into. it’s a love that doesn’t just happen to you\, you have to fight for it. you have to choose it again and again. \nmaybe a love like that can only happen after the disagreement. after the pain. after the anger and the resentment. maybe this kind of love begins when the differences feel bigger than the similarities. when you come face to face with a decision. and in that self-sacrificial moment you choose this other person over yourself. \nthis second love is truly miraculous: to give instead of take? to disagree and still love someone? to feel pain and anger\, frustration and doubt\, and still love someone? \nthe first love feels very understandable: i love what you give me.\nthe second love transcends this give and take: i love you in spite of what you give me. \n“to err is human\, to forgive divine.” mistakes can be happenstance\, but forgiveness is always a choice. it’s a choice to recognize that the bonds that hold us together are more meaningful than the differences that tear us apart. \nthe first love loves based on similarities. the second love loves the other in spite of the differences. our disagreement disallows the first love\, and yet\, that same disparity allows for the second love to be possible. \nthe first love comes into being through conformity\, united by homogeneity.\nthe second\, higher love is only possible when we disagree. when we choose each other in spite of our disagreement. \n“maybe every “other” is a “we” maybe differences are easier to see than the family we are that’s underneath maybe i need you like you need me”

SUMMARY:The Paramount Presents Gov't Mule "Summer Tour 2022"
DESCRIPTION:One wouldn’t think that in a career spanning more than 25 years and some 20 live and studio albums\, there could possibly be anything left for a band to accomplish that could be considered a first. And when that band is Gov’t Mule\, a group known for pushing the parameters while melding a variety of genres — rock\, R&B\, jam\, funk\, jazz\, and practically everything in-between — it’s even more astonishing to think there’s anything that hasn’t already been attempted. \nIndeed\, Gov’t Mule have never been known to rest on their laurels or shy away from a new challenge. Theirs is a sound that feeds off spontaneity and improvisation\, a signature style that pays little heed to expectation\, predictability\, or needless repetition. Consequently\, it’s not so much surprising that they’ve opted to record an album focused solely on the blues\, but rather the fact that they haven’t dared to do it before. \nThat said\, the band’s upcoming new album\, Heavy Load Blues (due November 12 on Fantasy Records) marks yet another milestone in Gov’t Mule’s remarkable trajectory. Yet\, it’s also been a project that guitarist\, vocalist\, songwriter\, and consistent helmsman Warren Haynes has set his sights on undertaking for quite some time. \n“For me\, personally\, it’s kind of been on my list of things to do for years\,” Haynes notes. “And for the last few years\, I’ve been thinking\, I want to do it sooner rather than later\, but I didn’t know if it was gonna be a solo album or a Gov’t Mule record. That was an unanswered question for me for a long time because I didn’t know if Matt (Abts; drums)\, Danny (Louis; keyboards\, guitar\, backing vocals)\, and Jorgen (Carlsson; bass) wanted to do a traditional blues album. But while talking about recording a new Gov’t Mule record\, our manager Stefani mentioned that in fact\, she thought we should do a blues record\, and it kind of made me think\, yeah\, maybe it should be a new band record as opposed to a solo record. We play some traditional blues on stage from time to time and although it’s usually never more than a few songs per show\, our approach to the blues is unique and based on our collective chemistry as a band. In hindsight\, I’m so glad that it turned out this way.” \nAlthough Heavy Load Blues can technically be considered a studio album\, it was recorded live in the studio.“We started thinking that\, well\, we can’t go out and perform due to the pandemic and yet we’ve got all this time on our hands\,” Haynes explains. “I had been doing a lot of writing\, so we might as well record as much as we can. We decided to record two records at the same time\, which would mean finding a place where we could pull off two entirely different set-ups with two different sets of equipment. We found this place that I had worked in the ‘90s called The Power Station New England\, and it’s a replica of the original\, famous Power Station studios in New York City where a lot of wonderful records were made. We set up in two different adjoining rooms to make two completely different sounding records. This particular album was recorded in what we called ‘the blues room.’ It had lower ceilings and it was a smaller space\, so we just turned it into something resembling a little blues club and set up like we were actually playing on stage together. We used monitors instead of headphones\, which meant we were more or less married to what we played. It was recorded virtually live in the studio because that’s the sound we wanted to capture. We used a lot of first takes\, and even if we did multiple takes\, they were done back-to-back. We would just kind of go with the vibe and add to the repertoire as we went along.” \nRecorded on analog tape\, the band utilized vintage guitars\, amps\, and other equipment to ensure an authentic sound.\n“For the most part\, everything we used was older than me\,” Haynes laughs. “It was an excuse to try a bunch of cool combinations. Plus\, it more or less helped dictate our direction. We would plug these old guitars into some weird old amps that I’d never tried before and the sound would end up influencing our approach to the songs.” \nIn one particular situation\, during the recording of the song “Make It Rain\,” they hit on a happy accident that occurred as they were laying down the track\, an unexpected element that actually helped enhance the song’s determined and defiant delivery. Haynes says it was a fortuitous situation that caught them totally by surprise.“I had brought in this old Fender spring reverb unit that I wanted to use on my guitar sound\,” he recalls. “They can be pretty finicky. If the stage isn’t solid\, or somebody’s jumping up and down\, it reacts by making this crazy reverb vibration that comes through the amp. I had intentionally set it up on the studio floor to make it kind of shockproof\, but what we didn’t allow for was some radio frequencies that randomly interfered and set it off. So\, it started making these weird sounds that sounded like thunder. We were in the middle of what turned out to be the best take\, and it began doing that throughout the whole thing. As it turned out\, it happened in these key spots in the song. For example\, the first time I say ‘make it rain\,’ it went off. We’re all looking at each other and kind of halfway laughing and halfway wondering\, ‘are we gonna be able to take that out? Because it was a really good take.’ When we were finished\, John Paterno\, the engineer\, and co-producer\, said\, ‘Why don’t you come in here and listen?’ When I walked in\, my first question was\, are we gonna be able to use it with all that noise? And he said\, ‘Oh\, we have to use it!’ It actually sounded like we planned it that way.” \nEncompassing an even mix of Haynes’ originals and revered covers originally made famous by the likes of Howlin’ Wolf\, Elmore James\, Junior Wells\, Ann Peebles\, Bobby “Blue” Bland\, and even Tom Waits and the Animals\, Heavy Load Blues provides a sense of authenticity maintained throughout the album’s thirteen tracks. An additional six studio tracks and two live tracks\, including another Haynes original and covers originally by Savoy Brown\, Sonny Boy Williamson\, Muddy Waters\, Otis Rush\, and more\, will appear on a deluxe edition. \n“I’m actually surprised that I had written as many blues songs as I had during the pandemic because I don’t tend to write a ton of traditional blues type material\,” Haynes reflects. “I have written a handful through the years\, but it worked out great because\, from the beginning\, the intent was to make this more of a traditional blues record and not just have a blues influence on it.” \nThe first track to be released from the album\, “Heavy Load\,” sets a different tone from previous Mule recordings. An ominous acoustic blues number laid out at a deliberate tempo and highlighted by Haynes’ mournful vocal and supple yet deliberate riffing\, it’s a number he claims to have been working on for several years\, but which he didn’t finish until shortly before the band entered the studio.\n“We tracked it\, just me and Danny\,” he recalls. “Danny played acoustic guitar and I played acoustic guitar and sang. It’s the last song that we tracked\, and it really\, really turned out great. It’s very traditional sounding\, as is the recording.” \nAnother of the many standout tracks\, the Junior Wells standard “Snatch It Back and Hold It” allowed the band to freely cover a classic while sandwiching a spontaneous jam called “Hold It Back” in the middle of a soulful\, stirring interpretation that was given a decidedly funky groove.\n“We had never played that middle section prior to recording it\,” Haynes insists. “While we were working up ‘Snatch It Back\,’ we just ran through all the key sections and when we got to the instrumental part\, we did a very brief talk through about how it might go. It was virtually a jam\, and in that sense\, it kind of referenced what we normally do on stage. We get an idea and run with it to see where it winds up. It never turns out exactly like you plan it\, which is great because if it is good\, it’s usually better than it would have been had you planned it a certain way.” \nIn that regard\, Haynes notes that while several titles may sound familiar to blues enthusiasts\, the band often opted to put its own spin on them. “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” is an obvious example. Haynes’ nimble guitar riffs are played out over a solid foundation of organ and rhythm\, resulting in a kind of funk-like finesse. \n“‘I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home’ was originally recorded by Ann Peebles\, but the first version I ever heard was by a New Orleans singer named Johnny Adams\,” Haynes mentions. “That’s one of the few songs on this record that we have previously played live. Through the years\, we’ve worked up a really cool version of it\, and so we decided to include it. We thought\, ‘well\, let’s play it a couple of times through\, and if we get a great take\, we’ll use it\,’ which we did. Then there’s the Howlin Wolf song\, ‘I Asked Her for Water\, She Gave Me Gasoline’ which we decided to do up-tempo and funky\, which makes it a lot different than the original version. It’s probably the heaviest track on the record\, and coincidentally\, one of the first things we recorded. We were still in the early stages of dialing in sounds and trying to decide on different guitar and amp combinations. To me\, it sounds different than the rest of the record. It has a similar nastiness to the original recording. As it was\, we kind of went for a different sound for each song in an odd sort of way. That was part of the beauty of it.” \nOf course\, those familiar with Gov’t Mule’s MO know that improvisation and experimentation have always been key to the band’s approach. Although Haynes admits that it can be difficult to capture that freewheeling delivery in a studio setting\, he feels that in fact they’ve managed to accomplish that with this album. \n“We take a different approach in the studio than a lot of bands do\,” Haynes muses. “Most bands\, I would say\, go into the studio to make the record that they envisioned then later they try to figure out how to perform the songs live. We’re kind of the opposite. We’re trying to conjure up in the studio what we know we’re capable of doing live. We get ourselves into a headspace and a comfortable place where we can tap into our own sound and that thing that happens magically when we’re together on stage. And\, of course\, those moments happen more and more the longer you stay together. We utilize a lot of the philosophy that we have developed over the years which is just to let things go and allow whatever happens to happen while trying not to overthink it. Any energy that’s lacking from having no audience\, we make up for by having multiple chances to do things over if we want to. The tracks wind up being kind of like blueprints for what will later happen live. For the most part\, we don’t think of them as the definitive version. Some songs may be\, but others\, — the ones that open themselves up to improvisation — not as much. Once you perform them live\, they kind of grow and grow and grow. A year later\, three years later\, they take on another life.” \nIn essence\, Heavy Load Blues found them skipping ahead and aiming for those final results even at the outset. “We went in with the specific goal of capturing the sound of the band playing live\,” Haynes maintains. “The only way we could do that was to set up the way we did\, and it not only enabled us to feel comfortable and play what we needed to play\, but to capture a sound that fits the music and the specific sound of an era. It sounds like what you hear in your head when you think about those classic recordings.” Haynes says that those were the influences that made an indelible imprint on him early on. “My two older brothers had great taste in music and began steering me towards blues at a very young age. I was a huge B.B. King fan — both of his voice and his guitar playing. I also loved Howlin’ Wolf\, Freddie King and Albert King. I had a guitar teacher that told me\, if you only study the three Kings — meaning Freddie\, B.B. and Albert — you could spend an entire lifetime just doing that. That really stuck with me. I listened a lot to all three of those guys. Muddy Waters was a big influence. Elmore James was a huge influence. I loved Otis Rush. I loved Junior Wells. All the people that we wound up covering on this record were major influences. Also\, Son House\, who we’ve covered previously\, was one of my all-time favorites. And\, of course\, everybody studies Robert Johnson\, who we’ve covered previously as well.” \nOf course\, there’s a fine line between interpretation and originality. Haynes says that when it came to the covers\, Gov’t Mule treat each offering on a song by song basis. “This album gave us a mission\,” Haynes notes. “Although in some way it was ‘anything goes\,’ we wanted to stay true to the spirit of the blues in a traditional sense. It’s not a blues/rock record – it’s a blues record. We wanted it sonically to sound different from a normal Gov’t Mule record and we wanted there to be boundaries. It’s hard to know where you draw the line on some of those things. It’s more of an unwritten rule that’s decided moment by moment. In some cases\, the original recordings had a lot to do with the approach we took. And in other cases\, we took the songs to a place far removed from the original. Some of them we treated a little more traditionally\, and some we stretched out and took more of a Gov’t Mule approach.” \nIn another first\, the band partnered with a new co-producer and engineer. It was the first time that they worked with Paterno\, and while it might have added another element of risk\, Haynes says that the end results overcame any uncertainties. \n“We were talking about having me produce the album\,” Haynes recalls. “If that was going to be the case\, then I wanted to get somebody who was really qualified to be in the engineering chair. John did a fabulous job. He and I had had a lot of conversations over the phone\, prior to going into the studio\, about conceptually what this album was going to be about and what it was going to entail. A lot of that fell on him\, technically — to figure out how it was all going to work — and somewhere along the line his role changed from engineer to that of a co-producer.” Ultimately\, Haynes says he’s completely pleased with how both the process and the project turned out. \n“I’m really glad that we made the decision as a band to make a blues record. Every one of us was excited about the concept and the change in direction. It forced us to do things completely differently than we’ve ever done in the past. When we would move into the blues room after recording Mule songs all day in the bigger room\, we were just kind of shutting our brains off\, and letting go and playing the blues. And it turned out to be music that only Gov’t Mule could make.
