SUMMARY:Artist Member Fernando Carpaneda Inaugurates Solo Exhibition at the Arkell Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Arkell Museum presents a solo exhibition by artist Fernando Carpaneda\, featuring portraits of ordinary people in New York\, portraits of friends\, and a series of paintings depicting scenes from Jones Beach\, New York. The works are executed in acrylic paint and reflect Carpaneda’s expressive and personal approach to portraiture. \nCarpaneda received the Best of Exhibition award at the Arkell Museum’s 2025 Art of New York: Annual Art Exhibition with Jury for his painting The Son of Man. As part of this honor\, the museum invited the artist to present a solo exhibition in Canajoharie\, New York. \nFernando Carpaneda is a contemporary artist known for his contributions to punk and homoerotic art. Since the 1980s\, he has developed a bold visual language through sculpture and painting\, exploring LGBTQIA+ narratives\, punk identities\, and bodies often excluded from the mainstream art canon. \nHis work has been exhibited internationally\, including at Sotheby’s in New York\, the Heckscher Museum of Art\, the Long Island Museum\, the Kenosha Public Museum\, the Tom of Finland Foundation\, the CBGB Art Gallery\, and the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art. His market presence and institutional recognition continue to grow\, highlighted by the sale of his work at Sotheby’s and the acquisition of his painting Pride for the Permanent Collection of the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil. \nThe Spring Opening Reception will take place on March 14 at 2 PM. Guests are invited to enjoy a glass of prosecco\, appetizers\, new exhibitions\, and the opportunity to meet the artists of the Regional Art Galleries. Admission is free and all are welcome. \nThe exhibition will be on view March 6 – April 24 at the Arkell Museum Regional Art Galleries in Canajoharie\, New York. \nFor more information\, call 518-673-2314 ext. 106 or email info@arkellmuseum.org

SUMMARY:Artist Member Sydell Glasser presents Views of the World: Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Views of the World is solo show of recent mixed media prints and paintings that have been completed by Sydell Glasser over the last eighteen months. The work will be on display at the Harborfields Public Library from March 3-29th\, with an opening reception at the library on Saturday\, March 7th from 1-3pm. The images in this exhibition mark a pivotal shift in Sydell Glasser’s approach to landscape. Her recent body of monotypes and paintings are constructed by adding textiles\, found materials\, and collage pieces from rejected prints into the final images. By blending natural references with emotional and tactile abstraction\, Sydell’s work invites audiences to experience diverse environments not just as places\, but as vessels for memory\, identity\, and wonder. \n“Feeling a sense of awe and humility against the forces of nature has repeatedly given me a grounding sense of perspective\, inspiration for my work\, and is something I strive to share with my audience. The notion that nothing is permanent\, that even the earth is moving beneath our feet\, has allowed me to gain perspective while the world around me is rapidly changing. This recent body of work has become a personal narrative about the times of triumph and difficult times in my life. Through monotype and material experimentation\, I seek to create prints that invite curiosity\, contemplation\, and a renewed way of seeing\, offering moments of beauty and grounding.”

SUMMARY:Heckscher Museum of Art presents Lines of Influence: Artists Teaching Artists
DESCRIPTION:Lines of Influence: Artists Teaching Artists celebrates the longstanding tradition of artists educating and learning from one another. The exhibition illuminates diverse pedagogies of artmaking across generations\, tracing networks of mentorship that include color theorist Josef Albers\, plein air instructor William Merritt Chase\, Abstract Expressionist pioneer Hans Hofmann\, and feminist educators Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro. \nDrawing from the Heckscher Museum’s collection\, this exhibition brings together 54 works by 39 artists\, including paintings\, sculptures\, works on paper\, and ceramics that span the nineteenth century to the present. It showcases never-before-exhibited works such as drawings of plaster casts by Thomas Anshutz and a terra cotta sculpture by Mary Frank. Other key works include an early abstract painting that Elaine De Kooning created while studying with Albers at Black Mountain College\, teaching sketches by George Grosz\, and a luminous “mindscape” painting by Richard Mayhew. Lines of Influence highlights instances in which artists collaborated\, apprenticed\, and guided one another\, revealing the vibrant exchanges that shaped their artistic legacies.

SUMMARY:Heckscher Museum of Art presents Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum 2026
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating its 30th anniversary\, Long Island’s Best has been a hallmark of the Museum’s educational programming for three decades\, showcasing the outstanding work of over 2\,000 high school students from across Long Island. What began as an annual exhibition of outstanding student work has become a lasting tradition⸺one that recognizes excellence while nurturing the next generation of creative thinkers. Long Island’s Best continues to be the only juried exhibition for Long Island high school students that provides the opportunity to exhibit in a museum. \nStudents are challenged to select artwork on view in the Museum as the inspiration for their own work\, making creative connections with the generations who have come before them. The Heckscher encourages students to think outside the box as they work in a broad range of media\, styles\, and subjects. Students also write artist statements explaining their creative process. This year\, 63 public and private schools submitted students’ artwork for jurying. 402 entries were received\, and Consulting Curator Meredith A. Brown and guest juror Aaron Feltman selected 84 pieces for display. \nThis anniversary exhibition celebrates its remarkable legacy. Visitors are invited to view archival memories and watch video footage featuring reflections from past exhibiting students\, teachers\, guest jurors\, and more. The exhibition also highlights numerous alumni who share where their journeys have led—from careers in the arts to paths shaped by creativity in countless other fields. Together\, these stories reflect the lasting impact of arts education and the power of early encouragement.

SUMMARY:Huntington Camera Club presents Student Opportunities: Annual Roberta Strent Memorial Award
DESCRIPTION:March 31 – Annual Roberta Strent Memorial Award\nThe Strent Award is a contest that recognizes not just the photo\, but the students’ desire to uphold excellence in this art form. The photo gets our attention; the student essay solidifies our understanding of the student’s commitment … and teacher recommendations round out our final decisions.\nAs local passionate photographers ourselves\, we truly embrace shining a light on young aspiring photographic artists.\nThe Strent family has established an annual $1\,000 award in honor and memory of Roberta Strent\, a beloved mother\, photographer\, and member of the Huntington Camera Club. The award will be made to a high school student who has demonstrated a superior aptitude and continuing interest in photography. This is not a photo contest: the quality of the applicant’s photography will be only one factor in the selection of the winner.
