SUMMARY:The Heckscher Museum: Raise the Roof: The Home in Art
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the spaces we inhabit\, Raise the Roof encompasses more than 50 artworks from The Heckscher Museum’s collection that reflect the many meanings of home. The house is a site where daily life unfolds\, work takes place\, identities cohere and shift\, memories form\, and imagination take flight. The art on view in Raise the Roof: The Home in Art demonstrates the central role that our homes have played in our lives and in art. \nRaise the Roof debuts significant recent additions to the collection by contemporary artists such as Courtney M. Leonard\, Kenji Nakahashi\, Becky Suss\, and Stella Waitzkin\, and features a promised gift by sculptor Ed Haddaway. Never-before-exhibited photographs by Larry Fink and prints by Robert Dash are featured as are artworks by Romare Bearden\, Salvador Dali\, Olafur Eliasson\, Miriam Schapiro\, and Esphyr Slobodkina. Each artist’s work embodies home in a singular and intimate way.

Visit Heckscher.org and Plantingfields.org for more information about these two dynamic exhibitions\, including new commissioned work by Leonard\, and related programming at each location. \nLeonard’s powerful work in ceramics\, painting\, video\, and installation engages with Long Island’s colonial history; celebrates Indigenous knowledge and resilience; and addresses urgent ecological issues. The exhibition will debut Contact\, 2\,023…\, a new work that the Heckscher Museum has commissioned from Leonard. The large-scale work will be a map of Long Island made up of thousands of individual porcelain thumbprints resembling shells. DESCRIPTION:The Art League of Long Island’s Open House will take place on Saturday\, August 19th from 11 am to 2pm. The Open House offers visitors an opportunity to learn more about its year-round art classes and summer programs and see what happens in the Art League’s specialized art studios. Free Art Kits to the first 100 visitors courtesy of Staples. \nArt League instructors will perform live art demonstrations in painting\, drawing\, ceramics\, jewelry making\, and printmaking\, catering to students of all ages. Some of these demos will be interactive\, allowing individuals and families to create fun art projects. Meet Summer Art Adventure Program Director Marianne Murphy and teaching assistants as kids work on fun hands-on activities. \nThe Art League is a not-for-profit art center offering more than 300 visual arts classes annually in a variety of mediums to adults\, teens\, and kids ages five and up. Classes\, workshops\, and open studios are offered to beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced students year-round\, in the mornings\, afternoons\, evenings\, and weekends. Students can register at any time throughout the year. Summer Programs are available for kids ages 5 to 14 and for older teens working on their college portfolios. In addition to the myriad art classes\, the Art League also hosts special events\, lectures\, and exhibits throughout the year. \nThe Art League of Long Island is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills\, right off exit 42N of the Northern State Parkway.

DESCRIPTION:Eight paintings and drawings by Barbara Boyd Carter\, including the pastel of Old Stone Church in Monroeville\, will be displayed in a group show of local artists\, Sept. 1-26. Her pictures of landmarks\, landscapes\, and old houses are on loan from the Monroeville Historical Society and the Heinz History Center of Pittsburgh. Barbara Boyd Carter studied with Andy Warhol’s teachers at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) in the early 1950s. Hampton Inn is a four-block walk from the library.
