SUMMARY:The Whaling Museum presents Beyond the Book: The Book of Eels
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, April 29 | Adults\n6:30 PM | Register to Save Your Spot\n“The Book of Eels” by Patrick Svensson \nJourney with us in pursuit of nature’s most mysterious creature – the eel! Part generational memoir\, part scientific mystery\, Svensson’s enchanting book traces humankind’s fascination with these animals. Discover how scientists\, explorers\, and philosophers from Aristotle to Freud have long tried (and often failed) to understand the eel’s epic migration from inland waters to open sea. Along the way\, the book explores the limits of science\, the beauty of curiosity\, and the way in which we seek meaning in the natural world. \nFree for museum members and library patrons of Cold Spring Harbor\, Huntington and South Huntington Libraries. $15 Non-Member

SUMMARY:The Whaling Museum presents Beyond the Book: Travels with George
DESCRIPTION:Wed\, June 24 | Adults\n6:30 PM | Register to Save Your Spot\nTravels with George: In Search of Washington and his Legacy by Nathaniel Philbrick \nIn time for summer road trip season\, join us to discuss this unique blend of history book and travel narrative from the award-winning author of In the Heart of the Sea. In Travels with George\, Philbrick retraces Washington’s 1789 presidential tour through the loose and quarrelsome confederation of ex-colonies in an attempt to sell citizens on the new government and the idea of being “American.” Alongside his wife and dog\, Philbrick follows Washington from Mount Vernon to the new capital in New York and eventually out onto Long Island (and through Cold Spring Harbor) while considering how the nation’s early history is understood and commemorated today\, all while grappling with the moral tangle of Washington’s legacy. \nFree for museum members and library patrons of Cold Spring Harbor\, Huntington and South Huntington Libraries. $15 Non-Member \nThis event is part of our “Liberty at Sea” series—a new year long program commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Bring your passport to the program and get a passport stamp!
