SUMMARY:Mary Ahern Presents Not Just Another Pretty Flower
DESCRIPTION:Solo Exhibition of the work of the artist Mary Ahern at The Atelier at Flowerfield\, in St. James NY. April 14 – May 31\, 2024. Reception TBA.\nARTIST STATEMENT:\nAs a passionate gardener\, my art is as intricately entwined as the gardens surrounding my studio. The lessons learned from the garden permeate my work. \nWith boldness in color & scale my art summons\, with seeming simplicity\, the complex questions of existence and purpose. These flowers represent a microcosm of the universe in their families and community as well as their quest for survival\, eventual senescence and rebirth. \nThe interconnectedness and balance\, whether of the cosmos in which we exist here on earth or that of an ephemeral flower flirting with a butterfly in the midst of a garden\, call our attention to the fragility and interdependency of our existence. With a duality of macro and micro vision\, my flowers invite the viewer to see\, larger than life\, the intricacy and purpose of their existence. And in their boldness\, I suggest a contemplation of their relevance and ours in the social order of our universe.

This annual celebration of small works features pieces no larger than 9”x11.” Rather than filling our center-wall special exhibition space (our “Darcy Arts Center” which will be covered with first signs of spring and then feasts for the imagination)\, all these little pieces will be in our Firefly’s regular spaces\, ringing the gallery right at the perfect height for young art appreciators. It’s a show of tiny delights that bring great satisfaction. The best part is seeing kids take it all in and then pick out amazing gifts for Mother’s Day! Enjoy!!!\nOn Display: April 12th-May 12th\nReception: May 4th\, 3-5pm

SUMMARY:Babylon Village Arts Council presents Rotational Art Exbibit
DESCRIPTION:Babylon Village Arts Council (BVAC) artists are featured at both the Babylon Public Library and Webster Bank for the month of March. The Rotational Artist Program connects artists with exhibition opportunities with its primary location at Webster Bank. There you can see a new featured BVAC artist each month. Kuchler\, of West Islip\, spends much of his time in the Blue Barn Studio\, his name for the converted 1 1/2-car garage at the end of his driveway. Kuchler has developed a following for his acrylic and watercolor scenes of rustic America through having his works displayed at local art museums\, libraries and gift shops. Kuchler is trying to paint all the lighthouses on Long Island. So far he has done Horton Point\, Huntington Harbor\, Cedar Point\, Plum Island\, Little Gull\, Long Beach Bar (Bug Light)\, Orient Point\, several scenes of Fire Island and Montauk Point\, and one scene of Stratford Shoal (technically in Connecticut waters in Long Island Sound). https://www.facebook.com/BlueBarnStudio.

SUMMARY:The Heckscher Museum of Art Presents The Rains are Changing Fast: New Acquisitions in Context
DESCRIPTION:The Rains are Changing Fast highlights artwork recently acquired by The Heckscher Museum of Art alongside a selection of key works long held in the Museum’s collection. For over a century\, the Heckscher has been collecting and presenting art that explores the landscapes and social issues of its place and time. This exhibition\, which takes its title from a 2021 video by Christine Sciulli\, features new and beloved works of art that together reveal the diverse ways in which artists contend with environmental and cultural change. Created over a span of 175 years by some fifty artists\, the works are united by shared engagements with landscape\, allegory\, and abstraction. Some\, like Richard Mayhew’s Pescadero (2014) or George Inness’s The Pasture\, Durham\, Connecticut (c. 1879)\, present luminous\, if precarious\, visions of the American landscape. Others\, including Deborah Buck’s They Had Stars in Their Eyes (2020) and Dorothy Dehner’s Landscape (1976)\, employ modes of abstraction that speak to issues of gender and materiality. The resulting visual conversations emphasize the Museum’s ongoing commitment to social concerns\, environmental issues\, and Long Island’s diverse communities.
