For 61 years, The Northport Community Band has been delighting Northport residents and music lovers from all over Long Island. For five Thursday nights from July 4 – August 1, the band performs under the direction of Don Sherman at the Robert W. Krueger Bandstand in Northport Village Park, overlooking scenic Northport Harbor. Listeners can sit on blankets or lawn chairs in front of the bandstand, or even enjoy the music from their boats. The band’s musicians are volunteers from all walks of life and include local students, teachers and professional musicians.
This year’s theme – “Tunes at Twilight” – will feature a blend of marches, overtures, classics and popular favorites drawn from the band’s 61-year history, plus new surprises. The Village of Northport celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2019, and each week will spotlight a “Greatest Hits of 1894” feature. Listeners always look forward to the final concert, which includes Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” complete with dueling cannons.
Guests and special features scheduled to date will include composer Aaron Robinson, who will conduct the premiere of his “Suite for Band”; Tom Gellert of the Huntington Community Band; Allison Scilla Bilawsky, who will conduct Rossano Galante’s “The Wishing Well”, commissioned in memory of Robert Domencetti; the Northport Chorale, Joseph Smaldino, Director; and Dr. Izzet Mergen, Director of Fine and Performing Arts, Northport Schools.
