
Cultural Arts Workshops for Teachers
As part of the Journey Program, the Huntington Arts Council offers an annual series of Cultural Arts Workshops for teachers. This professional development opportunity earns in-service credit for teachers in keeping with their district policy. Workshops are free for teachers in participating districts, but are open to outside districts for $15 per workshop.
This year's series will be hosted by Northport High School, 154 Laurel Hill Rd., Northport and will run from 4:30pm-7:30pm.

"Music and Culture of the Tuareg Tribe"
Mohamed Ahamok, member of the Tuareg tribe of the Sahara desert, hosts this workshop alongside Andrea Wozny, documentary filmmaker. Various elements of Tuareg culture will be discussed including their art, music, language, traditions, and nomadic lifestyle in the 21st century. This workshop may especially appeal to teachers of: K�5 grades, 9th/10th grade Social Studies, and all levels of Music, Art, and Special Education.

"Invisible Faces: A Theater Workshop About Hate, Race, and Acceptance"
Celebrated performance artist Margarita Espada of Teatro Yerbabruja will use theater games, and creative writing to raise awareness of difference, power issues, and discrimination. Participants will also view two films of original works by Teatro Yerbabruja that reflect the reality of the Latino Community on Long Island. This workshop may especially appeal to teachers of to: K to 5 grades, 9th/10th Social Studies, and all levels of Foreign Language, English, Music, Art, and Special Education.

"Shahrzad's Sisters: Storytelling as a Strategy for Survival"
Dr. Aphrodite Desiree Navab, an Iranian American visual artist, presents a fascinating comparison of four Iranian women who use image and word in their art: Shirin Neshat, Ghazel, Marjan Satrapi, and herself. Participants will then create their own graphic novels. This workshop may especially appeal to teachers of: K to 5 grades, 9th/10th grade Social Studies, and all levels of English, Art, and Special Education.

"Traditional Music and Drumming of North and South America"
Elizabeth Hanson and Gwen Dorell of the Brooklyn Fife Revival will illustrate the similarities between traditional Brazilian music and Mississippi Blues Fife and Drum. Participants will learn about both cultures and will learn the rhythms of maracatu, samba and fife and drum. Songs and basic dance steps will be included. This workshop may especially appeal to teachers of: K to 5 grades, 9th/10th grade Social Studies, and all levels of Music, Art, and Special Education.

"Arabic Culture and Calligraphy "
Arabic Calligraphy has been used in the Middle East for political manuscripts, eligious texts, poetry, and decorative arts. Through this beautiful art form, participants will learn about the culture of the Islamic world. Participants will practice traditional calligraphy and will create their own decorative pieces. This workshop may especially appeal to teachers of: K to 5 grades, 6th, 9th/10th grade Social Studies, as well as all levels of Art and Special Education.
